starter problem

ever since i bought the car a year ago i have always had a little problem with the starter but now its getting worse every day. when i got the car sometimes you would have to turn the key like 2 or 3 times before it would start. thought it was that the starter wires were curroded so i cleaned all the connections and put it back together. thought the problem was gone but it popped back up and it got to the point where you would have to click the key 30times before it would start. well this morning when i went out and tried to start it, i could tell by the first click of the key that it wasnt going to start. sounds a little different.... i can hear a click from the starter under the hood. dont think i hear the relay clicking.... im about to pull my starter out again and run it across the street to have it tested. i used to have a write up on what to check such as relay and switches and stuff but searched all day looking for it. if anybody has a checklist of things for me to do please let me know. clutch switch is already disconected. isnt there a way to skip the relay or something?

Are your battery cables all good. Sometimes excesive resistance in the negative cable can give a simular result, letting the solenoid engage but not having enough power to turn the starter itself. Cold have just got worse over time.

battery cables seem fine since i cleaned them the first time i was having probs. ground cable seems fine i disconnected it at the body and wire brushed it, and also wire brushed the terminal end too..... same with the starter ground on the tranny

Sounds like a typical bad starter solenoid and it finally decided to go bye bye. I would throw a new starter in it and be done with it.

well had the started tested 4 times, it passed everytime..... i guess im going to put it back together........

I never have good luck with bench testing starters or alternators. If it fails the on car test I replace it. Good luck though.

i just put back in my starter and the car started on the 3rd turn on the key. shut it off and started probobly 10times, it started up fine except for 1 time it took a few tries
