I did an auto to manual swap one my 92 N/T eclipse. I used a 91 N/T tranny, flywheel, and clutch(not out of same car) and a brand new starter. My starter doesnt hit the flywheel. I did some research and found that the starter is the same for all 2.0 dsms but the flywheel for a N/T is 10mm smaller than a turbo. So how can the starter be the same?

And i also tried using a turbo flywheel and clutch and i got it started but it wouldnt disengage so i checked the vin number on the tranny to make sure its from a 2.0 N/T and it was. so i know that i need N/T parts.

Could i rebuild the starter with a bigger gear to make up the the difference?

Any body have any ideas?

the part numbers are the same and a longer nose doesnt change the gear size. all the parts stores and online store i looked at had the same part number for both. and all the forums i look at before posting this said that starters were all the same. so i dont understand how the startes can be the same and the flywheels be different in size.

theres a difference in the auto and manual but not the turbo and non turbo. and thats were the difference in the flywheels come in there a 10mm difference in the diameter. so how does my car start with a turbo flywheel but not a n/t flywheel (which is the 10mm smaller one)? my trans is n/t, my flywheel is n/t and the starter was bought for a non turbo. i dont get. i guess this is what you get when you part a couple of cars together. but it doesnt make any sense. it all should work.

but was the starter bought for a non-tubo m/t ? or a/t ? a few post's ago you thought they were all the same (untill i proved to you otherwise) so what did you buy?

FYI - there is no "flywheel" in a a/t - there is a torque converter with a ring gear
Not trying to be smart.. but with post's like this it helps to call things by there proper names.

the starter for a m/t and a/t have differant depth noses on them.

i didnt read this right. i know the autos and manuals are different. but i meant that the n/t and turbos for a m/t are the same. sorry for the confusion. i have a n/t m/t. when i bought the starter i told the parts store a 91 n/t 2.0 eclipse with a m/t. i called them back a couple days ago and had them pull up the part number and it is the same one i got. soo i know thats what the starter is for. but why will the starter start a turbo flywheel but not a n/t? is there s difference in trannys from 90-92?
