Starion intercooler [Merged 9-7] FMIC front mount conquest

Don't bother, take the 100 bucks, and buy the Dejon tool upgraded SMIC. It flows ALOT better than the starion IC does. Trust me I KNOW i had one and it sucked. Not worth about the $300 you will spend on the intercooler, modding it, piping. Good luck

Got any data to back up the statement that a Starion FMIC sucks? It's been used as a performance upgrade on T/E/L's since day one. It is much better than a stock sidemount.

I put mine together for less than $200 including all the piping (http://www.vfaq.com/mods/StarionIC.html) and put down 252 WHP (about 290 motor) with the 14B and I've been driving it every day for 4+ years with no problems. It's not a race piece but a great , low cost, street upgrade, especially if you like to build things yourself.

i was thinking about the starion/conquest thing. But ive heard way to many bad things about it, crappy flow, pressure drop, end tanks and its a hack job. Ive heard better things about the supra thing, but its still a big hack job. I would just go with the cheaper Dejon tool stuff if your on a budget, they have a cheap yet good SMIC and FMIC dont they? one of there front mounts is just 2 rebuilt stock cores with better endtanks and stuff i think. I was looking at the Greddy one, its only like 800$ or sumthing with pipes uses stock pipe location and stuff....

id rather crap in my hand than put a starion fmic on my car.

OK I dont have the funds to fork out $600+ for a used fmic so I thought these would be my best choices for the $500 and less category. Which setup would be more efficient? This would be for a 14B running 16-18 psi

For the smic, I know of Dejon and ADFX... what other brands are available?

idt512, you might not like the manner in which NosLaser replied, but he is right. Starion I/Cs are hardly an upgrade over 1G or even 2G side mount I/Cs.

Front Mount I/C can be a good upgrade, but Starion is not a good way to go I/C cores are not all that expensive. By the time you get done welding proper inlets/outlets to the 88-89 big core Starion I/C (86-87 small core are not even worth considering) you will be well on your way to paying for a real core.

Plus, good I/C piping is NOT cheap and it is one the most important parts of the I/C kit!

I will second NosLasers advise: Save your money for a REAL I/C system

Are you implying the Starion setup is slower, like I was making MORE than 290 HP with the stock SMIC?? No way, it's much improved. Like I said it's "a performance upgrade". Check the VFAQ and the old Talon Digests see how many guys ran Starions with marked improvements. I'm not saying it's the best FMIC just a good alternative to spending big $$. It works.

I wasn't being a jackass you child, I was giving you advice from someone who has much more experience on the subject than you do. You got upset because I didn't give you the Fast and Furious answer you were looking for, but instead I gave you good, real advice. I will say it again. You will be wasting your money using a band-aid fix when instead you could save your money and get a setup you'd be really happy with. How old are you? You've got valuable answers from experienced people . They are tying to give you a hand so you will do it the right way from the beginning and actually end up saving money but you jumped to bite that hand.
This is why DSMs need constant maintenance and repairs. Guys do things half-way but than they expect the world from their poor cars so they and up "Cry-Cry-Cry".
Try to appreciate somebody's effort to answer your questions and if it's not what you were looking for express yourself nicely.

starion has more surface area, less flow. you will get similar results if you just mount your smic in front of your radiator. plus you could call it a fmsmic, and then confuse everyone.

anyway, they are right, dont waste cash on the starion it pretty much sucks.

Hey, I am wanting to know from all you 2G Starion FMIC users, just HOW did you mount your intercooler, and piping also. I am looking for a few pics and a little info on how you did it. I have a 99 Spyder GS that is getting the whole treatment with turbo and head swap! I am using the stock GSX turbo whichever one it is, the T25 or TD05. I will post pics here later.

Because he doesn't have a 420A motor. Go to the vfaq, there is a write up on how to install a Starion FMIC there.

Thanks, I found a way to do it with the dimensions of all the piping used and how to cuz and weld the IC to look clean. Sorry to post this again if it already in the VFAQ's. My bad
