standing mile question

Most of what I have read and learned here pertains to performance in the quarter mile. I've never really known much about standing mile competitions and the more I watch videos and read articles, the more I'm interested.

That said, I'm still a newb to DSMs. I just want to know what it would take to make one of our cars perform well in the standing mile (200+ mph).

I know a lot of power is needed, but a lot rests on the gearing too, right? What kind of gearing are these people running to acheive such high mph? Just curious, I'm not trying to build some 200+mph car or anything, Lol.

As far as gearing would go I would suggest to talk to team (RIP) from TRE transmissions, SHEPTRANS is also a good company to look at.

There are a few things that come into play with gearing. There is more than one way to get speed out of a car. Gearing is just one of them. Changing the transmission to one that is taller is one way. Some convert to rwd to give more flexibility to the gears they want to use. One way that many do not think about that are new to racing is tire size. Changing the suspension and being able to stuff larger diameter tires under the fenders is a good way and, on some older cars, a safer way.

As the speed increases, so does the friction of the tire to the ground. The tire heats up so much at higher speeds that, it may overinflate and blow. To combat this, using high speed rated tires along with them being larger in diameter, reduces the friction to an extent as the tire makes fewer rotations to achieve the same speed.

Another way is to get tires that get larger as they go faster. You see the most pronounced versions on funny and top fuel drag cars. As the tire accelerates, its diameter gets larger due to centrifugal force on the tire itself. Many drag tires have this characteristic but, to a lesser degree than funny/topfuel drag cars.

With a good combination of power, gearing, and tires, many cars have achieved 200+ mph in the standing mile safely.

How about we add another 2000 rpm on Jack's scale and a taller tire? WWWhhhoooo! That would be something considering 8000 rpm and stock size tire already could get us to 200+ mph.
