Stall in the autos?

Does anyone use stall in their automatic DSMs? Are there any kits for them? Im getting a LS1 with automatic transmission and I plan on installing a 3800-4000 stall in it. If my DSM was automatic I would definately be looking for a stall kit.

Depending on the mods for your LS1 I wouldn't go any higher than 2500 for street use. An LS1 isn't exactly a high reving motor. You are going to get a lot of spin at that rpm plus you will be only a couple thousand away from redline. I would stick with high 2, low 3k rpm stall for street use.

Well the difference is I plan on camming it and running nitrous (100-150 shot). Ill also ###### put 4.10 - 4.56 gears in the 12 bolt tranny. Not sure if im going with a MS3 or G5x4. 4000 stall will probably be too much if im running N2O, but for my setup i would think 3800 is ideal. Its all around. Forgot to mention I will definately be putting some drag radials on.

I have a deal pending for a 1999 Navy Blue mettalic Trans Am, auto, w/44k miles on it. Its adult driven by a women and garage kept. She wants $11k for it so once she gets her GTO which should be within the next 2 weeks i'll get my loan together.

Well since this has pretty much changed into a what stall to put in my 4th gen F-Body it should be moved to the hangout. To answer your question though, yes there are higher rpm converters for the DSM and some people use them.

Now as for your TA anything above a 3000 rpm stall is a bad idea unless you plan on building your engine. With street driven cars you want a stall that is large enough to idle with the cam you are running and nothing more. In your case let's say you are running a 230i/240e @ .50 lift duration cam. You will probably need a stall in the mid 2000 rpm range and your power band will be from around 3000-6500 depending on your other mods. If you run a 3800 rpm stall then that will leave you with very little time to enjoy that F-body.

I have to ask why you want to destroy the streetabillity of your car by putting that stall and those gears in the car. I had a 4th gen that was plenty fast and would cruise around town with no problem. That high of a stall will cause you to run extremely high transmission temps and those gears will kill your top end and fuel mileage. Just my .02 it is your car you can do what you want but I still have to ask why.

well thats only what i have been planning. im still working out the kinks. The car will be driven on the street but it wont be my daily driver. The guys on ls1tech have 3500-4000 stall in their T/As as daily drivers and the trans usually lasts about 5 years.

My performance days started in 4th Gen F-Bodies and all I can tell you is that if I were you I would not put that big of a stall in your car. If you are out for all out performance convert to a manual trans. I did the swap in my car and gained 10 miles an hour and one second in a 1/4" with that being my only change. We later found out I had too big of a stall in my auto and it was not letting me feather the car off the line like i needed to with street tires.

Of course it could also have something to do with driver but that was an almost 50 horsepower differance at the wheels with that change. Total cost was 800.00 including the tranny and I gained 60 whp pretty sweet deal I would say.

I am debating whether or not to swap to a 6 speed though. I think id rather enjoy the manual car instead of the auto. I just wasnt sure how much it would cost to swap and if its too much i might just keep the auto. It only cost you $800 to swap after you got the tranny? I don't have to worry about purchasing a manual tranny because there are plenty of LS1 guys around where i live and many of them want to trade trannys for the swaps.

The reason mine was so expensive is because I had to buy the tranny, rebuild it, and also get a new bell housing. The swap is rather easy as long as you have all of the parts and trust me you will see a difference the first time you drive it.
