I am about to pull the tranny off my 420A and get an OFE series southbend clutch. I have seen a lot of talk about installing neon transmissions as replacements due to longer gears, I read the 97 or 98 neon r/t tranny was best. I am wondering why newer neon trannys wouldn't be better or would an SRT4 tranny work at all? this whole transmission swap is drivin me crazy cause after i installed the the turbo kit 1st gear is almost pointless, just need something that will help me out with that.

if the neon gears are longer use the neon tranny but

i dont know too much about the 420a i mean its not my kinda car

I was under the impression that the New Venture transmissions for the SRT will not fit in the DSM.

420A motors can be found in Talons/Eclipses, Neons, Avengers/sebrings, and PT Cruisers. Of the six the Cruiser should be the heaviest, why not use a Cruiser tranny? Shouldn't the gears be longer? Shouldn't the tranny be stronger?

if i where u would go for a pt cruiser tranny

There are practically no internal differences between the transmissions in these cars other than the gear ratios. The PT Cruiser's stock clutch has a stronger clamping force, but the transmissions itself isn't any stronger than a DSM or Neon transmission.

I'm fairly certain an SRT-4 transmission will not fit.

I think later Neon transmissions are ideal. I don't know the exact cut-off, but I believe 2000 and later models came with transmissions more similar to that of DSM's. Prior to this year, they used a cable style clutch, as opposed to the DSM's hydraulic clutch. It's not a huge deal, as you can simply swap the bellhousings, but why do more work than you have to?

Additionally, you're more likely to find a low mileage transmission if it's younger.

i have an 03 base model neon tranny, i got it after i broke another casing after my manual swap. you'll love the longer gears, at 80mph in 5th gear in mine im taching 2750rpm. 90mph - 3000rpm, 100mph - 3200rpm, etc. its rated to 165 ft/lbs of torque, and im sure it can handle way more with an LSD. What's good about the 2001 and later models are that you don't need to swap bell housings. The only things are the shift levers, and speedometer sensor on the tranny. hope this helps you a bit.

The 2/2000+ T350's have a higher torque rating than those found in DSM's. The 01+ T350's have a hydraulic clutch setup.
