i got out of my car today and the rear started squeeked. i pushed on the back and sure enough it squeeks like a mattress. does this mean my springs are done? any other ideas?

Is you car soft or hard when you push on the rear end? I won't assume your springs are bad, probably your struts are old. Is your car FWD or AWD?

its awd and its fairly stiff when i push on it. it doesnt bounce up and down if thats what you mean. the thing has 90k miles on it and i have no idea if any of the suspension parts were ever changed.

On the rear of a 2G AWD?...ooo, about five minutes or, on a scale of one to five beers, you might open the first one.

You first need to identify the problem. To just start replacing parts can get expensive not to mention the time involved. A lot of tire and brake shops will do a free inspection and give you a written estimate for the job. If you stand there while they're making the inspection you can see if their evaluation is bull or ? If you feel somewhat confident with a wrench in your hand it's not that big of a deal.

Sounds like the problem I've been having for months now, except my springs/shocks are new. I can see marks on my shocks where the spring...or something has been rubbing on them. Do you see any?
