both the speedometer and odometer don't work in my talon. I bought it with both those things not working .. I'm assuming it's the speed sensor? Wouldn't it throw a check engine light then though? Unless the tranny is completely out of fluid I suppose and that's why the sensor isn't sensing anything. I know its plugged in. Could anything else cause these things to not work?

Yep its either the sensor, the cable, or something is disconnected. Not a bad fix really, I think you can get to the sensor area easily from above the car (under the hood LOL). Sorry really dont have any exact details tho about the placement of it.

I'm not sure if the speed sensor in dsms is a wound coil or solid state.

If its a wound coil you should be able to take an ohm meter to it. If it reads(I'm going to guess 500+ ohm..wich is what the allison tranny speed sensors we make where I work read). If it reads short or open then follow the break from there. It should probably be a touch magnetic too unless the tone wheel has the magnets in it(not likely).

If its soild state I think it should still read an ohm value. probably won't be as magnetic as a wound coil but should see some sort of magnetism. when you ohm it, if you get nothing swap the leads around as it may not read backwards.

If it reads fine see if the tone wheel(gear) in intact, wires to the sensor ect. mabe wiggle the wires to see if the sensor sporadicly goes open or short.

Inspect the case for cracks where fluid may have leaked in ect.

hope that helps..if there is any other info about speed sensors I can anwer ..ask:)
I like when I actually know about somthing

PS. I think it should read no matter if the it was dry inside. The way they usually work is by running a metal toothed wheel(or I guess it could be plastic with embedded metal) past a coil of wire wrapped around a magnet inside right towards the end of it near the wheel. when the teeth inturupt the magnetic field it creates a small electric pulse. The faster the pulses, the faster the speed.

I'm adding a vote towards the speed sensor not being plugged in. I busted mine on my 95 the first time I ever took the tranny out. And from then on I had no speedometer and also my odometer didn't move. Once I replaced it, it all worked again.

I checked the plug and it is plugged in. What if the trans is just low on fluid??? Would that cause it to not work as well since the sensor gets turned by fluid?

The sensor sends a signal because a gear wheel interupts its magnetic field and will work even if the tranny is empty. They are tested in free air when they are made.

You need to get an ohm meter on the sensor or the wires connecting to it. You probably have either a bad sensor or the wiring/connector is now bad. I know its probably easier said than done.

No, it's gear-driven.

Not to belabor the point, but did you actually reach down there and press down on the connector?

there is a yellow white at the data connector it's a speed sense wire take a meter and set it at ac voltage it should alternate from zero to what ever depending on the speed of the vehicel to find out if there is a signal being produce from trans or what ever hopes that helps

I am not sure but isn't it against the law to sell a car with a odometer that doesn't work? If you didn't buy it from a friend I would make the seller fix.

You can sell it, but you'd have to note on the title that the odometer wasn't working at the time of the sale and the mileage indicated isn't the vehicle's true mileage.

Yea but I bought it from a friend ... either way I couldn't prove that it wasn't working when I bought it though could I? Well unless the fact that the mileage on the odometer and title are still the same after about 300 miles LOL.
