Where do you get the splined socket to hold the input shaft when you are trying to undo the lock nut at the other end. F5M31-2 tramsmission and shaft is 7/8" 20 splines.

You don't need it. Knock the retaining pin out of the 5th gear shift fork, then slide the sleeve down (towards the bellhousing) to engage 5th gear. Then choose any other gear with the shift lever (3rd, for example) and the tranny will be locked in two gears at once and not be able to rotate.

I made one using an old clutch and a piece of bar stock. I cut the center hub out of an old clutch and tig welded it to a piece of bar stock. Then I bent the bar stock and welded a pin into it so it fits in and locks itself into one of the holes in the tranny bellhousing. Its really slick.

Alternatively, the jamming in 5th and 4th gear works well, as does an impact gun once you get the nuts un-staked.
