As the title says, I'm on the fence here about what I want to do at this point. I figured I'd turn to you guys for advise since most of you have more experience than I.

I've got a 99 GST that needs a new motor. I've been searching for months for a good 6 bolt to swap in, but I haven't had any luck finding one I can finalize a deal with or actually get my hands on.. That being said, I'm trying to weigh my options. I'm not sure what costs involved in me buying a 6 bolt that needs rebuilt and making sure it is done right/the way I want it would be as opposed to buying a used built one.

So where do you guys get your cores from, how much (on average, obviously it will differ if you're not near me) would you say having it machined .02 over would cost?

Thanks guys!

Edit: I should also mention that I've been trying to price out parts myself, but other than rods/pistons/cams and timing belt components, I'm not sure what else SHOULD be replaced/HAS to be replaced when doing a proper build, so any info on that would be appreciated too.

Why 6 bolt swap it? why not just rebuild your engine?

You have the 98-99 so that means you have split thrust bearings and that means it isnt really prone to CW anyways.

Is there really a reason to go to a 6-bolt when you already have the revised 7-bolt in the 98-99 models?

7 bolts are definitely underrated. Every one on this site says crankwalks a myth, but then swaps to a 6 bolt. I dont get it.

Wah wah woo wow, okay this is what your gunna do, post a want to buy add on craigslist, and on this site. Lots of people let them go pretty cheap, but shipping will suck if you find one far away. Good luck :thumb:

Check iowa auto forums.

there's a person there named Nitrousmike who was selling a race prepped 4g63 block for VERY cheap, just needs pistons/rods/etc. is already cleaned, machined, etc.

i really wish agian that people wouldnt get in their heads that they have crankwalk it can happen but very seldom does it happen

Agreed.

OP there is a 8-99 block in the classifieds right now. Why not go with that one? What is your reasoning for wanting a 6 bolt so bad?

Honestly, it has nothing to do with crankwalk, I just saw more people selling used 6 bolts than 7 bolts, and a lot of people say they are better motors, so that was what I was looking at. Also the fact that I don't know a LOT about cars, and wouldn't know exactly how to tell a 98-99 block from the 95-97 blocks, so I figured going the 6 bolt route would all together just be easier for me.

Clinical, can you link me there? Thanks.

If you dont know much about cars then you probably don't want to do a 6 bolt swap. I would stick with a direct replacement if I didnt know much about cars.

So you want to pay a boat load extra to put in an engine you wont get any benefit from? The only reason people say 6 bolts are "stronger" is because they are less likely to crankwalk, which is a totally blown out of perportion "issue" with 95-97 7 bolt blocks. Being that you have a 98-99 car with a split thrust bearing, which is also less likely to walk than the 95-97's, it is a waste of money to pay someone else to make the necessary modifications to your car to accept that 6 bolt.
