Just baught a new mass air flow sensor for the 90 laser.
Cut down the smoke alot, but still is smoking.. currently no muffler, so that doesn't help.
Is there a distinct difference on knowing whether it is the piston rings, or head gasket?

Do a compression test 1st, and post your results....
Then try and put about a Table Spoon of motor oil thru the sparkplug holes right on top of your pistons.
Then do a Wet Compression Test.... and again post your results
If your readings go up in value, then your piston rings are toast....

It could also be your valve guide seals....

Do a leak down test and you can tell the difference if it's a HG.
HG, take rad cap off, pressurize cylinder, if your HG is blown near a coolant
passage, then you'll probably see bubbles in the water.

These are all suggestions, but most common of course is the compression test, it can tell you a lot about the condition of your engine.
