Smoke while idleing?

A little more info would clarify. White smoke? Blue smoke? Is it after the car warms up, or is it right off the bat?

after warm up. and its white smoke, sorry for the vagueness of the question.

its not like driving then you pull up and stop and it smokes automatically right off the bat, its after it idles for an extended amount of time, like say before i kill it and let it idle is a good example cause sometimes i'll let it cool down for 2-3 minutes

First step is a compression test. This simple test can be done very quickly and will give you an estimate as to the condition of your engine and what is going wrong. A quick search will yield many results on how to perform a compression test and interpret the results.

From the sounds of it I would guess valve stem seals. To check for valve stem seal faults, you must remove your exhaust manifold and look at the exhaust runners and on the head for oil residue. Heavy oil buildup in these areas would tell you that oil is getting past your valve stem seals and it is time to consider rebuilding the head of the engine.

Does the smoke smell bitter like oil, or sweet like antifreeze?
Do you have coolant in your oil or oil in your coolant?

White smoke is coolant.
Gray smoke is oil or coolant.
Blue smoke is oil.
Black smoke is fuel.

I've got to agree that the symptoms you are describing sound a lot like valve stem seals going out. However, white smoke isn't oil, so get on that compression check and get back with us
