I'm trying to figure out what is causing my smoke issues. First off just like the title says, the car only smokes after sitting for a long time and then under boost. The smoke seems to be a blueish/grey color = oil. My oil level isn't moving at all. The head was just rebuilt 7xxx ago, new seals and guides. Bottom end has 7xxx on it and compression is 195+ on all cylinders. The turbo has zero shaft play, but there is a small amount of oil residue in the lower intercooler pipe. At first i thought it was the turbo, but that wouldn't cause the car to smoke at start up would it? Smoke on start up usually means valve seals, but those are new. Any ideas would be great.

That compression is really high. You probably have buildup on your pistons, or your gauge is not accurate. Here is a good link to find out what your compression should be: http://www.dsmgrrrl.com/FAQs/compression.htm

The smoking issue sounds to me like the valve stem seals are bad. It is not uncommon for valve stem seals to not seat correctly.

To check the valve stem seals, take off the exhaust manifold and look at the exhaust runners and in at the valves themselves.

Right after the rebuild i was seeing 200 on all cylinders. Looking through the spark plug holes i can see carbon build up on top of the pistons. What will the exhaust runners and valves look like if they are bad?

The valves thems selves are a shiney silver color. The exhaust ports are very black, but doesn't feel like oil, just very thick soot. Maybe carbon build up. Is this black soot actually burnt up oil?

Same problem, but there is definately some oil consumption. Its hard to know how much oil is consumed from the smoking, because I still use the (leaky) 1g turbo oil drain tube. ;)

So the smoking when first starting up and idling is what?
