Well I was headed home last night from work when I heard a strange noise out of nowhere and as I came to a stop at a light smoke soon followed. I pulled away from the light and was unable to build ANY boost at all. I took the next turn off to check everything out. When I got around to checking the oil, I pulled the dip stick out and smoke followed. I checked the oil and it was right on. I opened up the filler cap and more smoke came out. After it cooled, I limped it home.

This morning I took off the intake and found that the shaft had alot of play. I went ahead and removed the turbo and O2 housing to get a better look at the damage. I have yet to separate the two but from what I can see all the fins are still intact. I know the turbo is basically shot but is there any other damage I should look for? I am concerned about the smoke and wonder if there is more to it.

A few specs: stock 14b, I do not know the color of the smoke as it was at 10pm this happened, I was running an open downpipe when this occurred and I didn't know if that could have any effect on the turbo failure at all. I do have some future plans that include a 50 trim and supporting mods (fuel, DSMlink, IC...etc.)

Please help me figure out what happened and what other damage to look for.

Thanks for the space :thumb:

Smoke can be from turbo, head gaskit, blown rings. Do a compression test to get more details on what it was for sure, since your turbo has alot of play time for a rebuild or upgrade. Oh and BTW running an open dp can cause nasty boost spikes with out the proper wastegate to dump excess boost. When a turbo does blow white is coolant and black is oil can and can show up sometimes, a compression test will further let you know if anything else is damaged.

I should have done the compression test before droping the turbo and lines...oops. I am worried about spending the money on a nice new setup and having something else be wrong. Ohh how I love DSM's. There was no mixture of coolant and oil when I drained them for turbo removal so would I be correct to assume the head gasket is OK?

No, just rig you radiator back on so you can fill it up and run a comp test, you dont need to but if the head gaskit failed you will see bubbles in the coolant, though you will get abnormal reading from test or low comp numbers to. Though make sure that you do a comp test to check since you have to take the turbo off and is easier to pull the head when the turbo needs to be off anyway.

+ you should have done a comp test before hand and ran the car to see what color/smell exhaust was before the turbo was taken off.

Thanks for the quick reply everyone. It took me by surprise, the car never smoked before and about 2 months and 250 miles ago, I checked the turbo for shaft play before putting on the new intake. It was rock solid. The compression test will be next regardless. I just wonder what all I might find, haha.

It doesn't concern me too much but I have a nice DD which was bought after a few breakdowns in the Talon over the years. I figure if I have to get into the engine this time, might as well take my time and build it right. I just want to make sure I find all of the problems.
