Smell Of Exhaust/Fuel When Windows Opened

hey guys, ive noticed this ever since I bought the car and I finally remembered to post it here . Every time I am driving and I open my sun/moon roof and or windows, it smells like exhaust fumes or gas..but what I dont get is, it only comes when im driving, i could stand next to my car in the driveway and it never smells like it, i smell it most on the highway. what could this be? it sounds like I have a veryy small exhaust leak because it sounds liek paper flattering under the car somewhere but could that be the cause of a major waft of smell? Thanks in advance.

When I deleted my charcoal canister I smelled fuel more often. I just left the gas tank hose to vent near the firewall. But I never smelled gas while driving. I have a 97 and mine was under the battery tray. I would check for a leaky flex section or holes in your exhaust piping. Double check all your connections that use gaskets also. Running rich would make the fumes smell worse.. Recirculate that BOV.

you should check your evap system like mentioned as well as fuel lines and exhaust. if your mechanically inclined you see right away the problem ... i know im not giving you new info but im giving you the common info like mentioned before.

This is the charcoal canister bro... Mine has some broken lines too...u need to remove battery and battery tray. Just an fyi

The charcoal canister on the GST is mounted IN the gas tank. The parts under the battery are are the purge valves and check valves. The GSX canister is on the drivers side under the headlight...behind the bumper cover.

Found the tank pics. Part number 05289B is the canister.

I'm trying to figure out the same kind of problem. I had to have the clutch and flywheel replaced and while it was in the shop, I had them put on my EVO3 intake manifold and bored out 3KGT VR4 throttle body. Now, I get really bad exhaust fumes in the car whenever it's standing still. I need to turn off the heater fan whenever I come to a stop or I'm dying. I know that I have a small leak at the V band clamp for the down pipe, but that leak would not cause that amount of fumes. I have to check all of the hoses and connections going to the check valves under the battery. There is no EGR valve and the hoses from it are gone. The thread made me think of the parts under the battery tray.

Sorry, yes. It was two things....leaking V band clamp between the waste botto. Of the O2 housing and the downpipe and a leaking flex section in the down pipe. The down pipe had taken a beating over the years.

For me it was bad spark plugs on one of mines.
