I've been having an issue with exhaust smell for a little while now. When I drive with my windows down I smell exhaust really strong, but it is only when i hit boost. It doesn't matter how much boost, even a couple of pounds will do it. If I don't hit boost It doesn't smell at all. I have a cat back exhasut on it now, with no leaks that I can find. I also have no boost leaks. Anyone have any suggestions on what I should be checking.

Thats great and all but I'm pretty sure that it's not good for you to be smelling that all the time. It's so bad that I can't roll my windows down. That would be alright if I had a/c, but I don't.

Besides I'm sure that it's not supposed to be this way. I would rather have some information that might help me solve the problem.

i got the same thing buddy, like thatblondechik, its just part of owning a DSM, i can smell mine even with the windows up on a cold start. but i think my problem is due to mu idle screw being loose and my idle very low, so low the car shakes sometimes. look and see whats coming out the tailpipe, check around the engine. see where the smell is coming from

yea that seems to be all dsms. at least you dont have holes in your trunk like me.. i dont have the option to keep my windows up :banghead:

I've checked around in the engine bay for smell, and there isn't any. Even the exhaust at the rear doesn't smell all that much. The car only smells when you get into boost, even if it's just 2 pounds. It's overwhelming how bad it is. No one wants to ride in the car it's so bad.

it could be that your o2 sensor or maf could be going bad.

i smell my exhaust all the time, it exits right at the drivers wheel, its a a real kicker when hondas or subies or anything for that matter pulls up next to me all they hear is turbo and there faces go OMG

if its a 14b or 16g or so, maybe the exhaust side of the turbo has a big crack in it.

Like they already said, check for cracks or leaks anywhere exhaust gases go. Mani, turbo, o2 housing, dp etc. Have someone free rev your engine while you check. Use a spray bottle of soapy water. Check the seams where two parts come together. If you really want to try and fix it, take off your manifold and O2 housing and replace all gaskets, tap all threads, maybe buy new bolts, and retorque everything to spec. If you do all that and it doesn't help invest in some nose plugs. LOL
