Okay so I have a couple of rust spots on my car, and I want to take care of them. I would prefer to do it myself, but if overall you all recommend I pay someone else to do it, I may just do that.

Is it really this simple:

Does anyone have recommendations on types of compounds I can buy at the store, that you have had success with?

All the searches I did yielded the "weld it" fix for most of the rust issues, I was particularly looking for non weld options.

Well it depends on whether or not the metal is rusted thru. If it is rusted thru than you will have to weld new metal in. If it is just surface rust than you can grind it down, neutralize, prime and paint.

I am an autobodt tech. Take a pick and push it in the rust spots all around them to see if the metal is weak if it goes through they need to be cut out and new metal welded in. if its just sirface rust take a 3 inch angle grinder to it and clean it up making sure all rust is gone ( sand blaster would also be good). Then get some glaze and spread it over the area but make sure your edges were u took paint off are smooth feather edge withh 36 grit paper to bblend your glaze into the paint. Sand with 80 grit. Thhen finishh with 180. Get primer on it asap because the glaze will absorb moister. If you have bare metal spots use an acid ecth primer thhen put a filler primer over it. I personaly use all 3m and dupont products. Rember dont go cheap you get what you pay for.
