I have a 99 GST 63k original miles. Lately my shifting has been really sloppy. I have taken the center console out tightened the bolts on the shifter assembly and the shifter plate. I've tightened the bracket by the firewall as well and no luck. Sometimes it's so hard to get in gear you literally have to push as hard as you can. Idk what to check next anybody have any ideas?

Never force gears, that's how damage happens,

Check fluid level
Check for leaks
Check master cylinder adjustment

I know not to force it. I was at a red light n it turnt green. And I was sitting there for 10 secs after it turnt green and I couldn't get it in gear. But ok I'll check those and if not I'll be posting again. Probably won't get to it till the weekend. I'll post if it still happens. And I know there's no leaks everything's dry.

Aren't there bushings associated with the linkage that could make shifting difficult as well, considering he didn't mention a soft pedal?

Check the bushings on the end of the shift cables on the transmission for wear. Also pull back the slave cylinder to check for leak as well as the fluid level for the clutch hydrolics.

Putting the car into 2nd and then first helps substantially as well

Could possibly be your master cylinder rod needing adjusting. Also as mentioned, check the bushings where your cables attach to tranny. The bushings there are known to break/disintegrate. Replace them with new ones or do like most and swap em for skateboard bearings. I personally opted for the bearing trick as my bushings were pretty much non existent and shifting is now really crisp.

The aformentioned items, along with potentially a clutch adjustment, or you have a problem elsewhere; such as a worn clutch/fork/pivot ball/tob, or a transmission that is having internal issues like intermediate shaft bearings on their way out.

Start with shifter cable inspection, shift linkage bushing inspection, clutch assembly bleed/inspection/readjustment of master cylinder rod to increase clutch pedal throw (increase disengagement), and a trans fluid drain/inspection/new fluid.

Cover your bases.

Ok I'll check this stuff out soon as we get some nice weather it's been cold as shit and snowy here past few days including now. Thanks everyone for the ideas I'll post after I check everything. Thanks alot!

FWIW -- I was having gradually growing problems with shifting into first and third ('90 GSX) and changing the transaxle oil made a huge difference (installed Pennzoil Syncromesh). I later realized there was a lot of shift lever slop and I made my own nylon shifter bushings and installed a Delrin bushing at the "shift" transmission lever and it's made a world of difference. Shifting is kinda grainy (as in mechanical feeling), but it's solid.

I'm having the almost the same problem. except that it'll still shift into gear but not smooth at all. i already bled the clutch and made sure of no leaks so now my next step to look at the bushing. if i fix my problem before you ill get back to this thread. and all this info helps

so i have an update for my car. i drained and
refilled the transmission fluid and didn't find anything wrong with it. also looked at the bushings for the shifter cable on the transmission and found that the one that move the stick back and forward was worn out. it had about 1/4in play in it. i made a temp fix for now until i order some bushings for it. so yeah check your bushings
