Hey everybody.

(Car is a stock 1992 plymouth laser rs awd, standard trans. Ignore profile, thats my project car.)

Just recently my car started making an odd grinding noise when taking off in first gear. It goes til I get to about 10 mph, and the entire time it feels like the clutch is slipping. Now, I know its not the grinding of gears in the tranny, I have heard that before and this is completely different; Its almost like a whirring noise.

I've got all the symptoms of a slipping clutch but I just replaced it less then 10k ago. When I replaced it I bought a set from advance auto (clutch, pp, tob) and I used the Throw out bearing that came with it. Could this problem be related to the throw out bearing? I've searched for a while and havent been able to find an exact answer. Thanks!

When you hammer it, does the tach run away from the speedo? Whis would indicate slipping. Any bearing can go bad at any time. This is what a warranty is for.

Let us know.

Good Luck

Yes, the tach does run away from the speedo so I know the clutch is slipping. But I'm hesitant to just throw a new clutch at it and call it a day considering how new the clutch is. Is it possible that a throw out bearing failure would cause symptoms like that of a slipping clutch? Thanks for the reply :) , oh and I wish I had a warranty haha!

Well I tore the transmission out over the weekend and was not happy with what I found. My output shaft and transfer case have all their teeth ground down to nothing; Thats the grinding noise I was hearing.

My clutch disc still has a good bit of meat left on it but what was interesting was the springs on the clutch disc were rubbing the 'fingers' of the pressure plate. I'm thinking my pressure plate failed, but I can't be sure. The throw out bearing was also good.

I've got some pictures of the carnage I'll try to post up later.

so i take it is not for sale anymore...........this is the same car right
