on a set of 1g coilpacks there is a black wire with a little black box and a piece of metal that gets grounded. Obviously it's a grounding wire, but what is the purpose of that little black box? The reason I ask is my wire ripped out of my box and now my car won't start. I put a connector on the end of the wire and grounded it and still can't get it to start.

That little box is some sort of little resistor for the ignition i would imagine. If you look at a 2g and a 1g coil pack next to eachother the 2g coil doesnt have this resister. I believe in 2gs they relocate off the far driver side of the main engine wire harness. Its in the form of a little round metal canister. If you still have that thing (which you should) and its grounded you can remove the black one from your 1g coil completly and the ground wire. No point in having 2 things to do the same thing.

bastarddsm hasnt your mom unplugged your keyboard yet.

so its a capicitor not a resistor, i never claimed i knew what exactly it was only that you dont need the black one off the 1g coil when your 2g already has one doing the same thing on another point in the wiring harness. If you have neither of these plugged in then your going to have a problem but no need to have both. 1fast97gsx make sure you still have your silver one in and grounded, if you do then you dont need the black one or vice versa. I can tell you this from my own experience not guessing.

whoa I'm sorry i have a little experience with electronics, and I own a 1g with out a 50 trim and 660's

once again before you guys go and try to work on your cars like you think you know whats goin on, Learn the basics. That way you don't have to ask " der um the lil black thinga ma bober fell off that dad gum wire there and I grounded the wire now my car wont start, why?"

anyway I'm off the quantum mechanics have a nice day!

I know what you're talking about, it's on the bracket that holds the coil pack.
The only reason I know what you're talking about is because I was trying
to install the "bolt-on" FPR last night and it's impossible to install on the 1g "as is"
in the package. Anyway, I'm looking to re-locate the whole coil pack because the
mounting bracket is HUGE and there's a large clip that's in the way. ANYWAYS!
I saw the stupid rectangular black connection with the stupid wire coming out of it
and I have no idea what it does. Tust me.. tonight I will find out.

More jabber and no definitive answer. Sorry man.

well someone on team nabr told me this:

"Your problem is the wire to the black box that you grounded. That black box is a capacitor and the wire to it comes from the +12v wire that powers the coil pack! By grounding it directly to the block you are shorting it out. Unground it and electrical tape it off so it can't short to anything, replace any blown fuses and you should be good to go."

either way he was correct and it fixed my problems. :thumb:
