Well , first off before I get blasted, I did not see (maybe overlooked) any misc sub-forums for My kind of question.

95 gst 116k 5speed
Hes asking 1,500
Im hoping to drop it to $900

The bad is the sunroof glass is missing (he says he covered it)
The driver side panel is missing
Needs an alternator
And claims the valves are tapping
He said it'll need to be towed. (that he can do for me)

The good :
He says he replaced the turbo just recently with a Garrett, didnt specify which tho.
Full exhaust , I think 2.5
& a intake (ill end up taking it off most likely and replacing)

Im going to check it out , I got plans for awd (with a close friend holding the parts needed) :)
My question is should I go for it ?, I could always wait for another gst to come around but I don't believe with as low miles as the one im interested in. ive searched for common problems claiming some sort of ticking-like sound, and came about to :
The infamous lifter tick
And well crank walk. Im no lifter tick pro so when I go check out the car I don't want to go with his assumptions that it's the valves.
It could for all I know be crank walking.

what should I be aware of before purchasing this car, I mean cmon hes asking 1500, its hard for me to say no, I just want to be sure he's not passing down a cooked grenade.

Well all insight is appreciated, thanks dsmers
P.s. Ive done an estimate
Sunroof which I hear mitsu doesn't sell anymore, but Chrysler might - $350+ shipping
Alternator - $150
& 3g revisef lifters. (actually searched that up without the "new post drama" LOL )
Also a good $500 for a new paint job from macco, previous owner participated in plastic dipping activities, including hood and from that doors up isplastidipped black.

Don't go to Maaco, please. Go to a GOOD local paint shop. Might cost a little more, but at least paint will last more than a year.

Good luck with this project :)

I've actually seen that car on cl. If I was in your shoes, I would grab it up only if you're decent with a wrench. A lot of people get turned off these cars pretty quick when they break and they can't fix them. On that note, if you ever need help with it, I'm not that far from you. Oh, and the sunroof can be replaced with one from a base model, less than $100 from pullapart

For needed parts check the marketplace/classifieds on here for whatever parts you need. There are alot of stock and aftermarket parts in the part out section. The price seems fair, the tick can most likely be fixed with revised lifters.

There was a fairly loud lifter tick in our 87 jeep wrangler 4.2 and Lucas oil stabilizer made it stop. Some people say they don't trust it. But my dads been running it in his 97 dodge cummins since new and it's got over 350k miles and runs like new.

A new member that is capable of searching for solutions? I'll be in my Doomsday bunker if anyone needs me. :p

Keep in mind the stock 2g turbo is a Garrett T25, and it's really nothing special. So don't let the name-drop fool you. It's likely just a stock replacement.

Crank walk is much less common than it's made up to be. It will also typically end in a spun bearing, which produces an ungodly knocking sound. Lifter tick on the other hand is very common and usually much quieter. I'd look up some videos of lifter tick just to get an idea of the sound.

I hate to admit it, but 99% of DSM's in that price range are exactly that: A cooked grenade tossed your way. Be prepared to find all kinds of crap rigged up and ready to break. But if the body is clean, the engine runs, and your prepared to battle 20 years of neglect... what more can you ask for? Just be sure to check the body for any major rust. Especially near the shock towers and under the side skirts.

Best of luck! Lets us know how things go. :)
