Should I go for this? (TSI AWD)

We got a car in at work today...a '95 Eagle Talon TSI (AWD), it's got a sunroof, power seats, windows etc. The TSI has a little under 68,000 miles on it, and I had a mechanic look at it, and he said it looks pretty good. Here's the kicker, its about $2200 out the door...the only thing noticably wrong? Paint. I don't really care about that though.

How long could I expect this car to last? It seems to be running good now, the only thing that I found that was wrong was it idled at 3000 rpm for some reason (only a few times) after pulling at the throttle cable/hitting the gas, it is fine now...so I guess it just got caught on something. The car seems to have had the oil changed on time, and generally well maintained, aside from the paint, which is completely oxidized. Should I go for this? How is insurance on these also?

No, you should give me the number to your shop and walk away.;)

I would go for it if it is in the condition you have stated. Ask for a compression check and look around for other usual things most cars have happen to them in 9 years of wear and tear. As for the mileage, that is pretty good. The block can go far if left alone, and in some cases many have taken it high with mods. Is it an M/T or A/T? Check the drivetrain and make sure all recalls have been performed. It sounds like a good deal. A guy on hear got an OUTSTANDING paintjob from a budget paint place.

As for insurance, if you are buying the car at that price out the door. I pay the lowest cost at around $80 a month for the least amount of coverage a vehicle has to have to drive on Maryland roads.

Take it or give it to one of us.

It's an MT of course. The problem is, I know NOTHING mechanically of cars, especially engines. I wouldn't even know where to begin to check to see if the recalls have been performed. I also would probably be leaving it stock, as 210 hp is plenty compaired to my Civic's 127 (my normal/daily car).

As for giving it to someone else, I would, but I can't, you have to be an employee at my workplace, it's a wholesale vehicle.

Well then I would take it for that price. Sounds like a steal. Drive it and see what kind of condition it is in. Read around on here if anything is wrong or goes wrong. You will love the new power and the feel of a turbocharged car.

Hell, if you have some problems and what not, you can always sell it to someone on the boards. I would buy it, but that is just me.:thumb:

Price seems OK. I would see if the shop would throw in a timing belt change (if it hasn't had one).

Insurnace varies. Age, traffic record, etc. Best thing is to just call your insurance agent, give him the info.

Paint jobs will run $1000 on up, migh want to figure that into the cost.

Bottom line, its your money. You decide.

sounds fishy. maybe saklvage or TMU. think about it. all dealer has to do is get a basic paint job less than $1k, cuase all dealers have machanic and body shop hookups. and then they cuold easily sell a 68k tsi awd for $5,6,7K . dont want to rain on your parade but beware ive been around this businees and if you are also it doesnt ake long to catch on. but, hopefully all is good and you'll be a happy new awd owner.
goodluck.

It's not salvage or anything, I had it carfaxed already. I doubt I'd even paint the car, I just want the car to drive around and have fun, it's not going to be my main car.

That sounds too good to be true. I would definately pick that up and with all the money you save you can have it painted. Hell if you don't want it to drive, you better buy it and sell it.

definatly, if you dont get it, i want it =(. Its pretty hard for me to find a replacement talon for the 1 the tow company wrecked.

So, tell us. What was it? Alcohol? Drugs? Glue? Huffing paint cans? How did you lose so many brain cells. What reminds you to breathe?

Duh grab it duh. That is, unless anyone at the dealership _is_ brighter than celery, and it's already gone. You've been on this board for a quarter-year, and are having to ask us? Have you read anything, or did you just register and not ever log-on? Market price for that car -unless the missing paint is gone because the metal it was stuck on has rusted away- is easily double that.

They're fussy little cars, and worth every bit of it. They have a maintenance-to-driving ratio similar to a helicopter's. You may never get the idle gremlin killed, but when you feel the drive in it, you won't give a shit.

GOD DAMN DEFIANT. yours words of wisdom ring true again. listen to this man, buy the damn thing!

Haha..Yeah I registered a while ago, but I've never really logged on. My name is "on" the car, no one else can take it, I just have to have it inspected then if it passes, decide if I want to purchase it. I've been told by people I work with that they aren't that easy to maintain, and expensive to do so. Are they really that expensive to fix, when they do break? Keep in mind I can't do the work myself, and I don't know any good shops around here, unfortunately. (Maybe you guys do? Richmond, VA?)

I personally think they are easy to maintain and not too expensive to repair compared to any similar vehicle out there. There's no real way to say when any car will break. With 68,000 miles, that car should have plenty of life left if it's been properly maintained previously.

Other bastards who want to buy it, I'm betting.

Usually the morning after you post a "What's the best launch rpm?" question. If you treat it reasonably, it'll be reliable. If you try to drag race it, it'll be as expensive as owning a dragster. The answers are in your right foot. That's YOUR right foot. If YOU break it, it's because of something YOU did. It's just a car. They don't really know enough to mess with us.

You should do fine with it.

Yeah, I'm not looking to drag race or anything. I was just worried about the infamous dodge/mitsu trannies, and this crankwalk thing.

suck it up and buy it. cause if you dont we'll all drive over and kick your ass for not buying it [ or youll do it yourself after you get you first ride in a dsm :shhh:  ]

and as for leaving a tsi AWD stock?? i give you 1 week before you put your order in for MBC/boost gauge LOL.

Then half your worries won't ever happen.
I was just worried about the infamous dodge/mitsu trannies,
They break if you race and/or force them. The transfer case is warranty
and this crankwalk thing.
You're more likely to get walloped by a drunk. Worry about that, instead.

So do yu have it?

DSMs are like a drug... when you have one you want more... I had a friend buy 3 in the last year.... At first he was like man I would prob never own one... after one he was hooked.

P.S. Damn you Defiant a bunch of us were planning road trips to go get the car... DAMN YOU!!!! :p

And Dsms aren't hard to maintain... as Defiant says its all about how you drive your car... I drive like a maniac and my DSM is still in good shape. :) I just look after my car very carefully.

what a waste
of a thread
of replies
and most of all a mint dsm.
All this and they guy wants to buy it as a beater to save mileage on his 03 civic. someone find out were in virginia this guy is at and go save that adw dsm.

I am not trying to save milage on my civic, a Civic isn't something to save miles on. I'm just saying...I bought a $17,000 car...a $2k Talon doesn't make my civic a beater.
