i recently traded some old rims for a wet nitrous setup and i was wondering if waht shot i should run with the setup that i have. here are my mods: 1998 GSX

T-28 Killer, Hahn Frontmount Intercooler, NGK plugs and wires, K&N FIPK, Injen itake, Greddy Type-S blow-off, Upper and lower ICP, Apex-i N1 cat back and downpipe, Ported O2,turbo housing, manifold, Apex-i turbo timer, Apex-i SAFC, Apex-i EL2 Boost and EGT gauge,Greddy profec B boost controller, 550 Injectors, ACT 2100, Stainless clutch line, Short Shifter

still have everything internally stock. i would like to maybe put some cams in this winter and maybe do a head job. or go all out and take teh 7-bolt in the corner and build it up. just wondering what u guys think would be a safe shot to run just to give my car just alittle more hp without blowing it up..

if i were you id start out with a 35shot or so get a good tune with that for awhile and then when you feel more comfortable with the setup step up to a 50shot and tune that... start small and work your way up.. especially with nitrious

i personally wouldn't go above a 55 or 65 on stock internals, but they say that 75 is the max you can go on stock engine. and yeah, start small, work up, and get plugs one heat range colder. also, use premium gas.

I agree. A 35 shot is a good place to start. Then work your way up to a 50. :thumb:

i would get 660's and a afpr & gauge first. you dont need to though.

why get 660's? the wet kit delivers the proper amount of fuel, and his boost will actually be turned down due to boost creep with nitrous.

thanks guys. yeah i was gunna start with a 35 shot anyway and turn the boost down. just wanted to get some input and make sure i wasnt pushing any limits on stock internals with all my mods..

I just installed my NX Wet kit a few weeks ago, jumped right up to a 50 shot because i heard some people barely noticed a difference with the 35.
WOW, i must say im impressed. I spent a week breaking it in, went through my 10lb bottle already without a problem of any sort (checking connectors and solenoids after every run to double check)
Running a 96 RS with 50K miles, stock internals, CAI and 2.5" cat-back on 100 octane fuel. Runs like a champ

whoa underkill and over kill at the same time. the reason why he was worried about internals was because he was already running alot of boost, and the nitrous adds about 50hp more then the shot says it will on a turbo car. he will feel the difference with a 35, or should at least. with you, 50 is pretty small. i started with the 55 shot on my zex, and i barely felt it. bumped it up to 65 and i could feel it. bumped it up to 75 once i got the colder plugs, and it was great. we can run a 75 shot on our stock intermals. i am and i have 75k miles. and dont waste your money on 100 octane gas. you only need 92 or better, im running 93 and its fine.

Heh, my choices around where i live is 87, 89 and 91 octane. So i said screw it and just bumped up to 100.

how much does that 100 cost you? im not to sure, you should probably ask dsmjim, but you might be able to get away with 91, and if not im sure you could just put one of those bottles of NOS octane booster in with your gas.

Yea, i could proably get away with it at 91. BUT.......i love my :dsm: to much to risk anything right now. I MIGHT however up the shot to 75 this weekend for one day and try it out....just so i know where i stand...

having a really high octane on a n/a car will burn up your motor if you aren't careful, especially with low compression and stock internals. i'd say that 91 is safer on your car than 100 is, imo.

Acctually there is no reason that 100 will do anymore than 91 does. Octane resistance acctually makes the fuel harder to light thats why you don't detonate on it as easily as 91 because it's much more combustable. So really what your saying is backwards, he would burn the car up easier on 87. Regardless 87 is safe for the car as in 100 octane. The only thing your doing is wasting money and running higher octane than you need is acctualy making your car slower.

But running Nitrous ive understood that 91 or 92 is the least i should run DSMJim, true?

WOAH! Ok, let me get this straight, i SHOULD run LOWER octane with nitrous then (50 - 75 shot) because a HIGHET octane is worse for it? Yet in the instructions with my NX kit it INSISTS that 91 is the least that should be run to prevent detonation. Im not doubting you or anything, i would just like an explanation is all. seems kinda backwords is all.....

want to run a high octane for the motor to prevent knock.
higher octane's are harder to ignite
lower octanes are easier to ignite but could allow knock

so you find the happy medium.

you can run nitrous on year old 87 all day long if it is tuned right.
but how many ppl actually tune the car with nitrous, few very few.

no he is saying 91 is a bit low to run with nitrous. you want atleast 92-93.

Thats why i was running 100....then was told it was overkill. That was why i said 91 is the LEAST i should run. ah well, simple confusion. I run at least 91, usually 100 octane now anyways. Why? Because its the only choices i have out here at the pump, 91 or (if i drive a ways away) 100. unless i want to make my own race gas, which i dont have the space for anyways *shrug* So i usually just run 100 to err on the side of caution. :dsm:

all of the gas stations only hold 91 as its highest? thats weird ive never seen lower then 93 here. DSMJim, would he use the 91 and add that NOS octane booster? that could be cheaper.

i always heard higher octane fuel is harder to ignite! mixing it with no2 would make it even harder, and require more spark! wouldnt it make sence to spend a couple exta $ and get a multi spark ignition from msd to compensate for higher octane fuel and no2?

i presume thats the reasion why people are saying lower octane fuel with n02 on the stock ignition system, just to help the detination. am i right?

i dont think you could be more wrong. you want to run high octane gas, but thats talking pump gas. 100 octane is overkill. 92 is about the limit. you shouldnt go any lower, you need the higher octane to prevent detonation. the air fuel mixture wants to combust early due to high cylinder pressures and heat caused by the nitrous. nitrous makes it want to combust easier. so you need the higher octane to prevent it from combusting before the spark plug lights it.
