1G Shorter gearing for 1g road racing?

Hey All,

There isn't a whole lot of talk of creating shorter gearing in a DSM (most people seem to want gearing specific to drag racing)

I only need/want my dsm to go about 130-135. The stock gearing is good for much faster than this.

Are there any stock final drives or gearing combinations I can use to shorten up the gearing in my 1g by a lot?

If I recall correctly the GVR4 Evo had a 5.435 FD.

Galant GSX has the best ratio for that it seems. VFAQ has a whole page dedicated to gear ratios.

GGSX trans with dsm finals would do what you want.

GGSX gears are more or less the same. The final drive would seem to be what I need from it.

Anyone have actual verifiable experiences doing any of this? I appreciate the speculation, but I more wanted some real world experience.

, you must not understand how ratios work. GGSX transmission ratios are about the same a dsm, except a 2.84 first gear. The output reduction of a ggsx is much lower than a dsm, which is why a ggsx has 2.8 finals, and is still lower geared than a dsm. If you were to put dsm finals in a ggsx case it would be exactly what you want.

I have a ggsx, and it is indeed a closer ratio box coupled with lower overall final ratio. I actually want to try this in my car, but don't think the ggsx trans will hold up long at 600whp.

oh, I understand how gear ratios work (thanks engineering degree!) I just dont' understand the practical applications since I have never opened/rebuilt a DSM trans.

You could just swap a GGSX transmission into your DSM, just make sure you have a matching GGSX rear diff (2.846), since your rear diff ratio wouldn't match the GGSX trans front diff. Failure to match the differentials would fry your VC, or worse.

Or your could try to swap a 2.846 ratio into a DSM trans. You would have to swap the ring gears and the primary reduction set between transmissions. I don't even know if that is feasible, as I would suspect the construction of the center differentials would be different between the two.

Either way, the GGSX trans is weaker and probably wouldn't be the best choice for racing anywhere. I have a JDM GGSX trans for sale though, if you still want to give it a shot...

GST with PSI: if I understand this right, to do what you are suggesting (swapping GGSX parts into DSM trans) I'd need the intermediate shaft, output shaft, front diff ring gear, center diff, and rear diff pinion and ring gear?

Does the driving gear on the center diff come off? That is, can I install that gear onto a DSM center diff? I guess its time to start taking apart my spare trans to answer a lot of my questions.

^Yep. That's the only way, really. I could speculate, but can't say what exactly would have to be swapped, or if it could even be swapped at all.

I do know that you could swap in a GGSX transmission and rear end in to your car, and be good that way. It would be much easier than piecing together a Frankenstein transmission, that's for sure. Just don't forget, the GGSX combo will be weaker than any common DSM trans/rear end combo available.

I called them to ask what model car they came from in japan. They just told me talon/eclipse... I told them that they don't sell those in Japan, but they had no further information to give me. I think they market them as what they would fit in here in the states.

I would guess they are from a Evo III? but not sure.

Don't buy it until you get the transmission model number off of the bell housing. It should look something like this:

Get the code, and then you can verify what car it came from. That's how I got screwed, and wound up with this damn GGSX transmission. I was shopping for a replacement DSM trans, and ended up getting something that isn't even compatible. If I were to throw this transmission in my car, all kinds of bad things would happen. Is it a nice low mileage piece? Yep, sure is. Will it bolt up? Yep, sure will. Will it work in my car? Nope, sure won't. It's geared for a completely different rear differential. It's the last little tid bit that really matters the most. Get the part number, and figure out what you are actually buying.

everything is basically the same as a dsm only the rear is a 3.909, and requires a 98/99 transfercase.

It will vary depending on what EvoIII model you have. That's why I suggested getting the part number off of the transmission, rather than trying to do things the other way around. There's too many factors to rule out without the part number of the actual box you are getting.

You'd need a whole ggsx trans. It is different than a dsm trans.
1. GGSX output drives off of 4th gear instead of 3rd in dsm/gvr4/evo123
2. ball bearings on input shaft
3. Smaller vc. Can put the larger dsm coupler on it with some parts swapping.
4. GGSX output ratio is 1.68 dsm is 1.275

So if you run a dsm ring and pinion with a ggsx trans you'll have an overall output ratio of 6.49 from a dsm's ratio of 4.93
