Hey all, not planning on goin crazy with my laser pretty much exhaust, CAI, and a front mount.... 1) Wats the difference between short and wideband???? 2) is the short band worth my time???? With just these upgrades is a either required???? How about a logging setup? Don't know anything about tuning so if I can avoid learning it that would be great LOL.... However I don't trust anyone with my DSM so if I have to will.

What your thinking of is a narrowband, and they are worthless. Another thing, people usually get widebands when doing fuel mods (injectors, pumps, ect.) You could get one now, they are never bad to have. But, you definitely don't need one with those mods. Also, make sure you boost leak test after installing the front mount. As far is logging, the post right below this is talking about that http://www.dsmtuners.com/forums/tuning-engine-management/421760-laptop-logging-1g.html

I agree with jayb12. Although since you are going with a tuning software somtimes what the computer says and what is actually coming out of the pipe are different, so you may want a wideband. But with your mods not needed.

you can go to the forums on 1glink.com and check out the forums. Also you can email Eric Kosek (who runs 1glink) and is very friendly. He's local in my area, so he hooked me up a good deal.

Honestly, just pick up a palm IIIc from him and call it a day. I was trying to figure out how to make a cable, but mine always sucked hah. After spending a lot of time talking to him about logging, you're probably gonna have problems logging with windows 7 since I had the same intentions. The cables are quality though. He actually orders them custom made from a company rather than him making it with some wire and shrink wrap. ive slammed my door against the cable a few times and the cable is still flawless.

Any good links on learning to log???

Well basically what you want to watch for is injector duty cycle(idc's), timing, air fuel ratios(afr's), and knock and how to adjust them.

It becomes more involved later on, but that will get you started. There's endless amounts of info on this site about all the major points you need to watch for.

Tunning with a laptop is not a bad idea at all, i tune/log all the time with mine, but i'm also using DSMlink. Just use the search tool for tuning questions, all can be answered on here.

So logging with a laptop is a bad idea??? I know I've read a little about it, but how about something on my droid????:aha:

No, its a great idea. Logging is essential to tuning, keeping your car safe and making real power.

I was simply pointing out the main things you want to start watching for while logging.

Don't get me wrong, you're definitely going to need to log, but logging with a laptop is a little bit more difficult to get up and running....

Basically what I mean is that you'll actually have better luck trying to tune with an OLDER laptop. You'd want XP (from my experiences, you can't just run it compatibility mode), and the hardest part is recognition of the cable. If the laptop had a serial port (which I'm sure no newer modeled-laptop would have it) it'd make things a lot easier. If you'd have to run it via USB, there are only so many certain adapters that actually work to covert it. 1glink sells one that does work

Cables & Adapters

The recognition problem also applies to palm loggers that want to HotSync there logs to the computer (upload the logs to be shared or reviewed). Of course, if you manage to just build a USB cable to begin with you wouldn't need the converter... However, I'm not sure how to do this.

Like I said, I just wanted to save myself from any potential headaches. I felt like in the end, it'd be simpler to just get a plug in play setup right from the get go. For something so crucial, it will pay for itself time and again. And plus I was already somewhat familiar with the MMcD tuning software

And also just a few things to consider:

I log A LOT. I always have the logger in the car, and it's very easy to set up and run. I'm not sure where you'd setup your laptop so it'd be easy to cruise around and manage to check values at the same time. Also, I'm not sure if I'd feel all that safe leaving my lappy in the car every now and then and having to take it inside and out would just be annoying especially if this is your main laptop. Besides I know if I went to the store and had my logger sitting there, I'd be out of a $20 dollar 10 year old technology, not a laptop with pictures, papers, and all my other shit on it.

Or just buy the link v3 logging cable.
ECMTuning, Inc.

Which seems to work with all programs used to log a 1g. Jackal, link, mmcd, ts, tmo, etc.
