Her91-TSI-FWD

Hi Everyone. I am a newbie that has almost had it with my 91 TSI FWD non turbo AT. After dumping tons of money into this thing, it is starting again. Had a valve job done last year due to the famous timing belt which was originally done in '94. Recently did Throttle sensor, exhaust manifold, $300 in breaks and ball joints (left front wheel just fell off going 60!)ect. ect. ect. It was finally running right when my mechanic said to flush the trany. Well, now it is stuck in 3rd!!! It will not shift up or down or into overdrive. Took it to the trany shop and they said they couldn't read the trany part of the computer. It was either a short or the ECU (actually said TCU). Welp, drove it awhile. When you hit a bump, it works a little then quits. RPMS would stay 3000-3500 on the highway. Didn't want to drive it much winding it out. Mechanic barely worked on it this time, said he found a wire that was partly connected. However, it went back to him for a seal leak that turned out to be a rod thru the engine. AGAIN!! It also seems to need a front axel. The main question is if I redo the engine and get an axel, what are the chances of the trany being ok and it being an easy fix. I have searched and found nothing regarding shorts or the overdrive button. I wish they would quit putting in OD buttons!!! :thumbdown I also keep reading about all the problems. Should I get out now? Please help. I need a car that will run not be in the shop 10 months a year.

You're already in deep man- have fun =\

But as for the tranny, it's in safe mode. Something's wrong with the tranny, so it's locked itself into diagnostic\safe mode (3rd gear and reverse only). Try resetting the TCU (it's in the drivers side rear interior pannel). Either unplug it for a lil while or just disconnect your battery cable for a minute. See what happens then. If nothing, then there's something actually wrong with your trans.

When was the last time it was flushed? A type of rule of thumb that I've always gone by is that if the transmission wasn't flushed every 50k like it was supposed to be (i.e. if you have over 100k miles on a car that has never had a tranny flush) don't even bother, the gunk and crap in there is probably holding some shit together.

If it keeps screwing up, take it to a shop that'll pull the codes off of the TCU to see what the problem is, or to identify if the car is actually in safe mode.

Thanks. I'm going to move this over to AT forum to see if anyone else knows more. I am worried about droping in a new engine without knowing. You may see it for sale for parts. :thumbdown

I'll move it. Do NOT post this again.

Check the TCU as suggested. An 80- dollar fix in my case just a couple of months back.

I posted this in the newbie forum (see short or ECU??!!), and am needing a quick answer due to circumstances. I have serched and received conflicting information, and only have a week to decide what to do. I have almost had it with my 91 Talon TSI FWD non turbo AT 120,000, and I'll try to expain in a nutshell. I'm looking at another new engine that we thought was a seal. (and an axel) This is after the valve job, throttle sensor, exhaust manifold, $300 in breaks and ball joints (left front wheel just fell off going 60!)ect. ect. ect. :barf: It was finally running right when my mechanic said to flush the trany. Didn't want to drive it much winding it out on the highway. Mechanic said he found a wire that was partly connected left? front by the transmission. However, I don't know if that was it, being the engine is shot. The main question is could it be the TCU or the end clutches? The dealer doesn't even know if they can hook up to it to read the codes, so who can? Can the TCU be scanned if the car is out of commission? Should I do the engine not knowing the trany problem or start over? Is the TCU seperate or part of the ECU? I was thinking it was a short because the dome light and aftermarket CD player were acting funny here and there. It seems like the shifting out of 3rd is a new problem. The OD button problem came and went. Before you would have to jerk forward or backward to make it work before going. Please help!! I need a running car that will not be in the shop all the time. I don't make enough money. Are any of you all close to Athens Ohio to help?? I have only seen a couple DSMs arround. I have seen what this car will do when it runs right (twice) and want to see it again. It's either that or part it out to lovers. What could it be worth? I just want the thing to run.

Thanks. Can you check the TCU with the engine being shot? We just blew a rod. Could that have happened due to the trany being stuck in 3rd? Do you think I should redo the engine or start over? It ran great for a week here and a week there.

The only "how-to" I know of was a link off of DSMTalk which is now down. transdude on here was the author if I'm not mistaken.

As long as the car has 12v power, you should be be able to pull the codes with a voltmeter, but I don't remember the pins to use on the OBD port. :(

Edit: I merged your threads. Do not create multiple threads for the same issue(s).

Why did you move the TCU or End clutch string? :thumbdown It is a different more specific string, and I was wanting Transdude to respond! :D

Half the damn post is the same AFTER I asked you not to do it.

Sorry Lando I rewrote it before you said not to repost. So how do I get the other questions answered? Rewrite it with just the questions. I'm just trying to get some damn answers before I ditch the piece of !@#$ car!!!
