shift lever movement tranny off

[DSM AFFECTION]

97 awd 5speed tranny was just rebuilt.
Transmission is still off the car. When i move the lever that points upward (closer to front of car) i can get into 3 gears. When i move the other lever that points sideways (closer to firewall) it doesnt move. Is that normal with the tranny off the car? or should i take it back?

The lever you speak of moves IN and OUT. It is actuated when you move the shifter in your car side to side. Pull it out (away from the transmission) and try to shift the other level.
