I had to change my brothers CAS and I am worried about the timing. I have a logger that I just bought, but I am extremely new to tuning. The logger says about 28* at WOT. From what I have read that is too high and risky, but I am not getting any knock. Which from my little bit of knowledge means that we are fine. He's 17 and it's his DD, so I would hate for something stupid to happen because I 'm slow.:sosad:

Get a timing light, put some white out on your timing marks, and time it for 5*BTDC. You just have to turn the CAS until your marks are lined up.

Edit: Wait, is it a 2g or 1g? If 2g what year?

If the car you are working on uses a 2g CAS, then it is all adjusted by the computer. If it's a 1g, like gsxtgacy said, use a timing light and set it for 5*. The figures displayed at idle on the computer base off of the fact that actual idle timing is 5*.

Be sure to ground the proper wire to set the base timing if its a 1g style. otherwise the ecu will just compensate the opposite direction. Its one of the wires on the firewall. Check VFAQ and tech articles....or the factory manual or Chilton's/Haynes if you've got it.

Don't have the logger cable hooked up near the fuse box or it will not let you see the correct timming. If the logger cable is connected, your timming mark will not be steady when you look at it with the timming light. A manual from Napa will show you the rest. Be carefull of the wires to your light, don't let them sit on the exaust manifold. I've burnt some myself. I do manage to keep them away from the fans and my cam gears. So far.

Thanks guys. Sorry for the confusion about which car, it is a 1g. I will see if I can borrow a timing light from somone, and I will post back with results/questions.

Correct.

Having the datalogger attached to the car grounds pin 10 on the DLC.
Setting the base timing requires you to ground the timing adjust connector.

Grounding both the timing adjust connector and pin 10 on the DLC puts the ECU into BISS adjustment mode. So you can't have a datalogger attached much less use it for setting the base timing. It can only be done with a timing light.

You must also have a less than 1200 RPM idle speed while setting the timing. If the RPMs are 1200 or more the ECU drops out of timing adjustment mode.

The datalogger expects the CAS to be adjusted for 5* BTDC and the value displayed reflects that. If you set the CAS to anything else you need to mentally correct what for see on the logger for the difference to get actual timing.
