secondary air injection malfunction relay "A"

I just got this code, and my car wont Ilde or run well (backfires and doesn't go when giving it gas). I recently had my CAI off and it seems I might have unplugged a vacuum hose on accident because my car wouldn't start after re-assembling everything (it would just start then shut off, and if you gave it gas it reved then shut off). Any help is greatly appreciated thanks.

Sounds like a vacuum leak, check for unplugged lines or maybe hooked up wrong? Is the cai on tight, no leaks?

The secondary air injection on 95s was recalled and you are supposed to take your car to a dealer and have it removed. But you should also check that you put everything back together correctly when you took the CAI off.

what is the secondary air injection? I'll post a pic of what the intake mani looks like, there is a hose thats not going into anything but is coming off the middle nipple on the back of the intake manifold. Also its an Injen CAI and there is a nipple on the left of it near the throttle body with a hose on it going to nothing, is that supposed to go to something? Anyone have pics of what the intake manifold should look like with a CAI (I have that sensor set up where it says vacuum and EGR on it that have hoses coming out of it and connecting to the intake manifold).

synthetek is right, that was a recall. I went to the dealer to verify and they were nothing short of useless...The guy insisted on convincing me that it wasn't a recall (he's wrong).

If you don't know what it is, it looks similar to the EGR system. It sits below the EGR and pulses hot exhaust into your intake. If it's malfunctioning it shouldn't cause the car to run poorly like you described, so I'd definitely check for vacuum leaks.

Best thing you can do is remove the secondary air. This is done by just removing the solenoid, plugging the vacuum line, and cutting off the harness that goes to it and soldering on a resistor. I can't remember what size resistor you need, but could check for you when I get home if you like...


FYI- It only came on 95 N/T's with 5-speeds. Aren't we lucky?

ok I'll deal with the stealership for the recall, but I found out thats not the issue. It ran perfectly fine before I took the CAI off to clean up the engine bay. When I put it back on, I may have forgot to hook some things up that were on before Not that an CAI is hard to hook up, but there is something with the EGR set-up that is causing this I believe. When running, besides the horrible idle (loping like is a 5.0) there is a loud air sound in my CAI cone. Any thoughts? I had to take a sick day, so its either I figure it out in the next hour or so or I may bring it to a shop...

P.S. If there is anyone local who can help I will offer a High Performance Polished Aluminum intake manifold. (Schenectady/Scotia NY)

UPDATE: The car got towed by AAA to a good local shop. I know some of the people there so at least I know they will do a good job and not rip me a new one with the bill. Still upset that I couldn't figure this out...
