So after an extremely lucky balljoint popping out of its socket incident, I've been going through my suspension. Just about everything is getting replaced and or upgraded. I noticed that the upper control arms, and some of the lower rears are just stitch welded and rather flimsy - the rear uppers are excessively flimsy due to their design.
I wanted to weld in my front adjustable balljoint cups rather than just have them sitting there, so I decided to seam weld the rest of the arms at the same time. For the rear uppers I used some 12g flat stock I had laying around to reinforce the center bit of the arm that is just a single layer of steel.
Now since my car is still awaiting more parts to get back on the ground, I figured I'd ask if anyone else had done anything similar.
I was also thinking about fabbing some adjustable arms to replace the trailing arms and the toe adjustment arms in the rear. These would be poly bushed to maintain streetability. I've seen some 1g folks do this, but haven't come across any 2gs with it.
I'm still trying to work out a feasible design for the lower rear control arm that incorporates a swaybar mount while still allowing the bar to be fully adjustable. The simple solution would be to weld the arm rigid at the hub end while keeping the body end adjustable, but you'd have to disconnect the arm from the body to adjust it. My other idea is to have a sleeve that incoporated the swaybar endlink tab in it. You can loosen the sleeve when you need to adjust the arm, and then tighten it again after the adjustment is done.
So, thoughts? I don't really have a purpose or need for this project, just the fact that I want to do another project.
