Seal "grooves" on crank

After pulling my front and rear cases, I have some very shallow grooves in both ends of my crank where the seals ride. (maybe .002-.003; can barely feel them, but they are there).

I think I asked about this in another thread somewhere, but can't find it.

Will this hurt anything? I put the new rear seal on and it seems to seal tightly.

Dont worry about it all of our cranks have that.

That groove will cause the seal to leak much sooner than it should. CR makes Speedi Sleeves, it's a thin sleeve that goes over the shaft on the sealing surface. I'm not sure if they make them to fit our cranks. I know they make them to fit the cams.

As long ago as this was, I honestly don't remember for sure....but I think I just installed new seals and ran with it until I tore the motor down and converted to a 2.3L.

You can have a machine shop install a sleeve onto the crank. Another option is to simply not press the seal into the housing as far. Then the lip of the seal rides on a fresh spot.

I was hoping to get a new seal with a larger width. Same OD & ID but wider so it does not ride in the groove.

However, I have no idea where I can buy seals based on dimensions. Can your shop help me out with that? 2mm wider should do the trick.

The other alternative is to space it out like you suggested. I was thinking of using a spacer to gap it a little and use the OEM seal.

I'd prefer to install a wider seal (simpler) but I can space it if I can't find an appropriate seal.

Thoughts?
