I am about to get my car's roof fixed up (clear was fallling off) but the prep work is a lot of money. The clearcoat has turned white and is flaking off, and in most parts, you can already see the basecoat. I was told car everything needs to come off, including the basecoat. What grit sandpaper should i use? And how should i go about doing this?

Ive painted a few cars before, in the process of painting mine. I used 100grit craftsman sandpaper on a disk that hooks right on to any drill motor. I sanded mine all the way down to the metal. Some people only take it down to the primer and I havent seen much of a difference in finish, but it snot gonna take you that much longer to take it off all the way. If your using a powered sander (which youll want to cause its gonna take some time) make sure you keep it flat or youll be putting deep grooves in it and theyre not fun to sand out by hand. After sanding make sure you wash it till your arms hurt. You can use dish soap because it will take off and wax particles still clinging. Use a tack cloth and go over the car to pick up any dust. For the primer I used Duplicolor self etching primer because it adheres to metal very well. After putting down a coat of that youll notice any groves that you put in it. Nows the time to hand sand those out. I had a couple and wet sanded em with 100grit and came out great. Are you putting down the final layer yourself?
