ok right now i have a 2g mas and an s-afc in my 1g, the s-afc was in my car when i purchased it, and im about to convert to the gm-maft setup, and my question is do i like set the settings on the s-afc back to 100% normal ? and then does it just " unplug " or is it wirined into the ecu or what ? cuz i have no idea how its hooked up.

Install the translator setup per instructions, 0 out all the SAFC settings (record them first so you can default back if need be). config the translator, testdrive and adjust translator/ SAFC as necessary. Got logger? you will need.

If you wish to get rid of the SAFC (I still have mine) you will need to remove the drivers side cover to the center console to be able to access the ECU connectors. you will see the harness that is spliced to the factory harness that will have to go, but be sure to insulate the exposed wires. you will also have to reconnect the airflow wire (which had to be cut completely to wire in teh SAFC) I recommend doing this one first. Apex-i website has the install directions for download so you can verify the wire color. (but it should be hte only one that is cut completely in half)

Dont remove the AFC. Leave it there. The MAFT will tune but it wont be as precise as an AFC and you wont get the best pwer becasue of it. Not to mention you already have the AFC installed and working just leave it.

Put in the MAFT and set it for your injectors and other options then use the AFC to fine tune that last little bit. You will need to zero out the old AFC settings to setuop the MAFT first and then tune the AFC from there.

well i plan on selling the s-afc , i agree with the fine tuning, but we'll see, ill wait till i get the GM maf in there and ill decide, i really see no use to have both, but who knows. thx for the advice guys :dsm:

im with everyone else on this. from what i understand, the translator is not the best thing to tune. it will work, but its more like a bandaid than a tuning tool. if you have your s-afc hooked up, it works, and you know how to use it, then don't take it out. its more trouble than its worth and you risk breaking something on your car. only reason i would take that thing out is if you were going to install something better like dsm link or something of that sort. just my two cents.

Exactly. That was my point. Why get "close enough" when you could be dead nuts on. There are not alot of members here running just a MAFT for there tunning. I am going to be getting one here in the future and am still keeping my AFC. Just an opinion, your car so you do what you want.

I have a s-afc already, and im planning to go the maft, but once i go to the maft, do i keep the setting at karmen, or do i change it to something else?

Leave it set for Karman.

DON'T get rid of that AFC! Like these guys said, the MAFT is just a ballpark tuning tool.
There's another advantage of the AFC and I hope I'm understanding this right: the AFC modifies airflow readings, so you can tune the MAFT rich, and then lean it out with the AFC to get your fuel trims right. Since the AFC is decreasing how much air the ECU sees, you'll get more timing.

Generally, guys with 'regular' setups can tune fine with the MAFT alone. As the combinations get further from 'regular' then the AFC has more and more value.

That said, keep the AFC, you are familiar with it, its a good unit. When you get the tune done you will know if you need it and you can dump it then.

The AFC and the MAFT modify airflow signals in similar fashion. Tune one rich and the other lean the resulting signal to the ECU is the same. No free lunch here.

That's what I figured. It didn't make sense when I thought about it, since the translator is kind of a bastard child of the AFC that can read the MAF airflow values and translate it to Karmann. Still trying to find out why my timing is so shitty, but this isn't my thread. :thumb:

related to this gm mafs + maft + s-afcII....

I'm building turbo engine and using my current n/t ecu, would it be good setup to install gm maf+maft+s-afcII to get good settings for the tbo engine work best ?

Or should i just leave current 1g n/t mafs in place and use s-afcII with it , or maybe 2g mafs ?

(kinda newbie in these stuff so treat me gentle :) )

If you're going to swap to anything, in my opinion just get a 2g MAS. It's a good upgrade over the 1g one, plus they're cheap on ebay ($30, if that). Here is a good discussion on why people really don't NEED a MAF/T setup. I spent $500 on mine, and I got a GOOD deal on the piping. That money is better spent springing for a turbo 1g EPROM ECU and getting DSMLink when it finally comes out for 1gs down the line. The MAFT + SAFC is a shitty combo, I won't lie. It's not terribly difficult to tune, but the MAFT is airflow based tuning and the SAFC is RPM and throttle based. It becomes a headache fast.

In short, spring for an EPROM ECU ($150 - 200) and get DSMLink ($635 excluding the socket service).
I'd just buy a turbo car, sell the n/t, and upgrade ;)

hmm okay, well maybe 2g mas and s-afcII would be okay setup ?

btw. easy for you to say that you would just buy tbo dsm, u have thousands of them there, in here we have ab. 60 dsm cars of range 1990-1999 so turbo ones are extreme rare.(and the few 1g dsm tbo cars i have seen in sale here cost ab. 15 000$)
