My 90 Eclipse GST has two rust holes, one on the passenger quarter panel and one in the driver side rear fender well. I failed inspection because of it and need to get it fixed to get my car on the road. What would be the best way for me to repair the rust myself that will last and not crack? I've never done rust repair but I do everything else to my car.

well depending on the whole and location, someones first guess would be bondo. putty it up, sand it down smooth and slap some paint on it.

if you have access to a welder, i would cut out the rust and weld in a small patch panels, grind down the "slag" and paint it.

just my late night 2 cents.

If your laws are soo tight that a rust inspection failed you, then your car should have been blackballed till you get it structurally fixed and certified by an engineer. Otherwise them 'failing' you is pointless.

What the hell is going on in Transylvania rust police?

Rust holes are an automatic fail here too.

Welding in metal is the only correct and proper way to do it.

He is right, the only way to get rid of rust is to cut out the rust and put new metal in. you could bondo the rust, but it would come back sooner than you think.

How bad is it exactly, did they see these holes from the outside of the car?
If so you have more than that to fix your car the right way.

If I lived anywhere in the NE most of my car would have rubber spray on the thing, I haven't seen a SINGLE car from out there(yes I've been almost everywhere) that has had only a 'decent' amount of rust on it.
I'm not saying your car should look like a phoenix car, I'm just saying it shouldn't have got to the point of rusting a hole.
Get online and search for some rust treatment, its cheaper than a new shell.
