I just put all new Brembo brakes on and in a matter of months the hats on the brakes were covered with surface rust.

I have friends telling me I need new brakes, not knowing that they are only a couple months old.

Is this normal? Is there anyting that I could do to prevent this? High temp paint? Some type of clear coat?

It is normal for metal to rust when sitting out in the open air for any decent time. I have painted the rotor hats before on other cars with just normal Tremclad rust paint, but I would suggest getting them powder coated this time......way more durable

Brake compents rust, thats just the nature of it. Rotors can start rusting in a matter of weeks after being installed. I highly doubt you need new pads, you can pulll the caliper off and look at the pads, but it shouldn't be needed.

I understand that metal will rust..... but my old brakes, stock brakes, that have been sitting on the floor of my very old detached garage, that is not even close to being weather proof (big hole in the back wall), have less rust.

I would have thought that rotors from a company like Brembo would hold up better than stock rotors.

I thought about powder coat, put I didn't want to pay the extra $60. Maybe I should have.

Did you just get the rotors? or the full brembo kit? I'm looking at getting full kit when I get my car. Send me a PM if you go the full kit.

bare metal will rust whenever water touches it, theres nothing you can do to fix that, if you havent driven it in a couple of days, it can form on the surface of the rotor, which is what I think your talking about. They do not need to be replaced, just drive it, hit the brakes a good couple of times, and guarinteed the rust will magically vanish!! Off the face of the rotor anyway.
Guess I should have read the rest of the post.........................powder coat probably would be the only thing that would prevent the rust, unless theres something else out there, but powder coat is all I know of.

If you're that concerned with the appearance of the rotors, some caliper paint on the hats will keep them nice and clean (well, from rust at least; brake dust is another matter...).

I'm surprised that the Brembo's are rusting. Do you have the Brembo OE replacements or the Sport kits? I have the Brembo Sport rotors, which are supposed to have a special coating to prevent rust. My car is garaged eight months out of the year, and since I put them on in November, I haven't seen any rust.

I don't have brembos but I have zinc coated crossdrilled and slotted rotors from trinet and they haven't started to rust except for a little in the holes, they've been there since the summer...I have pics in my gallery if you'd like to venture a look see

I bought the kit from Speedfactor with the Brembo, OEM replacements rotors and came with new pads, lines and fluid. I couldn't find a better price for OEM replacements.

I wanted to get the Baer kit for the front and the power slot big rotors in the rear but It was a little over my buget. Used the rest of my money to complete the rest of my turbo upgrade needs.

I was talking about the hat part of the rotor.

I'm actaully get a new set of rotors sent to me beacuse the first set warped. The first time was because I didn't clean the rust off of the hubs good enought so the rotors didn't sit flush causing them to warp. The second time I don't know why they did, but they were still under warranty, so I guess I'll use some caliper paint or high temp paint on the hats.

Are you just trying to make me jealous?OMG .... looks great. How do you like the crossed drilled and slotted.. I went with blanks cuase I didn't want to eat up the pads as quick, plus I don't road race or anything but man yours look nice...:thumb:

make sure you clean the hats nice and good before you throw on the paint. Painting over rust is only going to cause you more problems. My brembo's have rusted over like that too. Not a big deal, doesnt affect braking ability at all, dont listen to your friends, most likely they have no idea what they are talking about.

I'll be painting a new set. (we must have been posting the same time)

I know it doesn't hurt the performance, it's just the looks and with my friends pointing them out (some didn't know that I just replaced them), they look like they are 5 years old. I was just a little disapointed they didn't stay looking nice for very long at all..

I personnally have never used this product but their is something on the market called brake caliper lacquer set from folia tec its a set that once used is a permanent surface preservation, chemical, corrosion and oil resistant,is long lasting gloss and heat proof ..i woud search the net for it i can buy it here in rutland at yipes try their website http://www.yipesauto.com/index.htm .

the surface rust is nothing to worry about bud. We have had plenty of people paint the hat of the rotor to prevent the rust look but there really isn't anything to do about it. All of our rotors are Zinc coated so you don't have to worry about any kind of loss in performane.

Zinc coating is key..I bought new blank Brembo rotors all around..no zinc plating, so it's rusting all to hell. Get it zinc plated.
