RPM's drop suddenly

So i was driving around the other day and i noticed that when i held the gas pedal in the same position the rpms would drop from around 3000rpm to a little below 2000, as far as i know the boost stays the same and i can still gain speed. If i push the gas down a bit more the rpms jump up to where they should be. Any ideas on what could be causing this, i drive and auto by the way.

Is the car staying in the same gear when it does this? Sounds like it's just upshifting and downshifting to save gas / provide power as it sees fit.

4th gear and/or your torque converter locking.

Normal function of an automatic. Its a good thing.
