This is a 1991 Eclipse FWD Turbo. Ok. I did a compression test on my engine because I have a bad smoking problem. Smoke coming out of the breather on the valve cover, and when you take the oil cap off while it's running smoke comes out of there too.

I did the compression test and number one was way low. With oil in the cylinder the compression jumped up to 160 - 180. So I would say rings, correct?

Next question. Should I replace bearing while I'm at it, or is it best to not fix what isn't broke? The engine is either new or remanufactured. I could tell this when I got it the block and head were both spotless and had a sticker on the block that said about the gasket mating surface.

Any recommendations on brand of rings, and gaskets, and possibly bearings? I used TopLine before, but I didn't really care for their stuff. I want something reasonably priced, but better quality than TopLine.

Thanks.

If you're going to do rings, you might as well do pistons and bearings while you have it all torn apart. It doesn't cost a lot more and it's the right way to do it. At the bare minimum, have your head checked for warpage and check your deck with a straight edge and a feeler gauge.
