So the story begins with over crushing my stock 1G DV, ok, end of that story.
I was stuck on that dv though and I wanted another one, , I liked that it was reliable and that it did it's job, I could care less about the aftermarket ones available to me, until.......I saw CanadianTSi's Forge 1G DV while I was doing dv research. He was stating how he fixed his body to flange leak, which I also got...but that's further down. I immediately liked the ability to move the hg tube any position you needed/wanted it to be, along with the recirc tube...you can move that to any desired position also. I wanted my 1G to do those things but it couldn't.
Pricing was fair IMO, ~$165 shipped from Velocity Factor (which was mentioned from another member).
The Forge unit is very nicely made. Very shiny for you guys that go for that and loud IMO. The fact that the two tubes can be rotated 360' is very convenient. Mine came with two extra springs, a green, a blue, and a yellow one which was already inside the DV. The yellow one holds 21psi just fine and is between the two other springs (green, yellow, blue)...Patrick correct me if I'm wrong.
I took the dv apart to check the spring color and I was just curious to see the inside of this dv. I also rotated the two tubes to accomodate the hg line and recirc tube.
One thing I noticed after taking it apart was that the bottom half leaked. After putting it all back together and doing a BLC on the bench, it leaked at the flange to body area. It may not have leaked at Forge because they have the bottom nut tightened down to spec but since I took mine apart, I may have broken their seal...no problem. I've seen folks get theirs welded, but then the recirc tube cannot be rotated anymore, which is just fine for most folks. I decided to make a gasket for it instead so that I can rotate the tube later. You never know if it will need to be moved to another position because of a new intake pipe or when DSMLink comes out with version 3
. Anyway, it was an easy fix and nothing to worry about, a little RTV would have netted the same results, but the gasket I made did the job (with RTV on it of course) and it holds great to 21psi. The DV was only roughly .25" taller than a stock 1G DV. I was afraid that it would hit or rub against the fuse box or/and cruise but it doesn't, there's plenty of room.
Once it was installed and the leak fixed, I took it out for a spin and it opens up fairly well at low boost and low RPMs, just like a stock 1G whoosh, just louder. At higher boost and RPMs it sounds off with a (please forgive my sad description) whoooosh then it finishes with a loud whistle= whooooosh-phiiiiiissssssst, and it's seemed very loud for being recirc'd IMO. Now I'm not a DV/BOV expert since I've only had the stock 1G and then this Forge 1G, but I do like it a lot and with it's price, I recommend it with two thumbs up.
Note*
Please note that I also have a short route UICP and a Dave Brode 2.5" throttle body elbow, which moved everything over towards the fusebox and why I was worried about the Forge unit hitting the fusebox and cruise bracket. If you have the stock 2g elbow and the stock long route upper piping then you won't have to worry about the clearance.
Update*
There's been an update in the DV design. The lock ring that connects the flange to the body has been revised. The two openings at the bottom no longer go all the way through the ring. I've bench tested the design straight out of the box and it did not leak. I also tested it after moving the dump tube around (as I did with the original one in my car now) to see if loosening the nut would affect how tightly it sealed and it still sealed really nicely without it leaking. The yellow spring that was included held perfectly to 21psi with no hissing around the unit at all. I would venture to say that there's no need to weld the body and lower halves together anymore.
I'll post pics of the revision as soon as I get spare time.
