Ok, I have a 99 Eclipse N/T Manual. My reverse lights are not coming on. Checked the fuse, fuse is good. I picked up the Haynes manual and they say something about the back-up light connector switch. Any idea where this is or what my problem could be? Much help would be appreciated.

Crap, I can't find a good picture. There's only two sensors on the gearbox, one is the speedometer and the other is the backup light switch. Try the configuration diagram, see if it gives you enough of a guide as to where to look.

Apologies.

Theres 2 plugs that are hooked to the transmission. On the front of the car and on the back. The one in the rear near the rear tranny mount is the Speedometer sensor. The one on the front is the Reverse light switch. Its probable that yours is in need of a replacement.

did you even check the bulbs  ...cause you never said you did
Andrew

edit: the back up light switch should be on the transaxle, looking at it(from the front of the car) itll be a little to the right and down a bit...that is the best I can give you being as though I cant scan and attach the picture. Good luck

tHATS a 4g63 he has a 420a n/t. but if you switch it aotund thats basically where it should be on your n/t....did you check the bulbs??
Andrew

yea i checked the bulbs they are fine. so that plug can be accessed through the console or under the car?

I'm having the same problem, although I have a 1997 Eclipse RS. I bought a replacement back-up light switch from Dodge (yea, its a Mopar part), but I can't seem to find it anywhere on the transmission. That attached image above kinda helps, but not really. How would I access this switch? From underneath the car, or down through the engine bay?

Also, I haven't checked my fuse because I'm not sure where it is? I looked under the hood at those fuse boxes, but nothing said anything about reverse lights or what not. Where could I find that fuse?

Thanks

The answer is, the switch is not accessable through the cab. It is on the transmission in the non turbo 2g model as you look at the tranny from under the hood, under your intake piping, on the far right side of your tranny, towards the front of the car ( front right corner). The vehicle speed sensor is on the other side of the tranny where you cant reach it readily, so that is not some thing you have to worry about. :dsm:
P.S. buy a chiltons for 8 bucks its the best investment you will ever make

alright, they work now. i took out the battery and battery plate to expose the top of the transmission. i then saw the switch, removed it, tested it for continunity and found out it was bad. i put in my replacement from mopar, hooked the plug back in, put the battery back together, and tested her. reverse lights came on. very good day :) :thumb:

Through Mitsu dealership, sensor was $56. They said it was a Dodge part and it may be cheaper to go to a Dodge dealership. After discovering it was a Dodge part, I asked a buddy of mine who works at a Dode dealership to pick one up for me. It was $13 at dealer cost, but don't expect that price unless you know someone on the inside. :thumb:

I Have the same problem w/ my back up lights.. i have a 95 :dsm: gs n/t and the tranny is on the left side of the engine.. i see something that plugs into the tranny up front i havent got around to removing the battery and battery plate yet to check if there is a plug on the back of the tranny.. would it be the front plug or the back one...??

I know I'm resurrecting a thread that hasn't been posted in for almost a year, and it actually almost 2 years old, but I'm having the same problem, and need some questions answered.

I've got a 1997 GSX, so I'm working with the 4G63, not the 420A.

Alright, first question. This is the backup light switch, correct? (In the middle of both pictures)

If it is, than I'm even more pissed off at my ####ing mechanic than I already am.

Next question. If that is the backup light switch, where might the wire that plugs into it be? Where does it come from? Where should I look?

Thanks for the help, in advance.

yup thats it... i don't know where the wires would be comming from as i have a 420a.. but they should be floating around somewhere near the tranny or engine...

Thanks for helping me identify the switch. Now I just need to find the plug... Chilton's doesn't mention where the plug comes from, just that it plugs into the switch. :notgood:

I just bought one from a Chyrsler dealer for 29bucks. Mitsubishi dealership is a rip off...

Anyways, the bigger problem for me is that the top of the switch (plastic knob where the wires connect to the top of the switch) is broke off. I looked at the new switch and it seems like the portion that sits inside of the transmission screws in, because I see threads on it. Is this true, or do you just pull the switch out?

Yes, the sensor screws in. You'll need to find a way to un-screw the old, broken one.

And do not bump or reply to your own prior posts... it tends to get threads locked.
