hi just got a 98 2g gst, and i was wondering have any of you fhad trouble shifting into reverse cause when i shit in i sumtimes grind even though i push the clutch althe way down, is it the tranny mayb a sign of a crank walk of jus bad clutch. what could it b.

I have the same problem. It doesn't grind when i hold the clutch down for a couple of seconds before shifting. im thinking this is more of a clutch / linkage problem, why would you suspect crankwalk? Im replacing my stock clutch with an act 2600 and also adding a fidanza flywheel. Ill let you know if things change.:thumb: :dsm:

I always shift into first gear before going into reverse to avoid grinding. I never had any grinding issues on the stock clutch, however it was slipping at the time I bought it so I don't know if that would affect it. After I put a new clutch in it started the grinding, shifting into first before reverse should eliminate it though.

It'd never have any relation to crankwalk, and you never need to mention the term again in your life.

Perhaps your shifting skills are performed with a degree of care similar to your typing abilities.

When you press in the clutch of a running engine, the transmission gears will coast for a good 30 seconds. The reverse idler isn't tied into the geartrain, so it's just sitting there at a dead stop.

To never again hear gear clash when shifting into reverse, in any car you'll ever drive, gently bump the shifter against 5th before pulling back into reverse. This uses the synchro bands on 5th as a brake for the cluster gear, and now the whole transmission is at a stop just like the reverse idler is. Sometimes it'll stop at _just_ the right point to block the teeth directly against each other, preventing engagement. To surmount this circumstance, either shift into 3rd (which will usually move the gearsets enough to unblock the idler) or let out the clutch in neutral and then de-clutch and re-bump 5th and try again.

DSM transmissions have a brake on the reverse gear to try and prevent gear clash, but it doesn't seem to be strong enough to work as they'd hoped.

I actually shift to fourth before I shift to reverse so it doesn't grind.

defiant. I don't know about the 2gs but the 1gs have a tranny stop that prevents you from going into reverse if you have even started to bump the syncros in 5th. This is there to make sure you don't think it is a 6 speed :D. Ya gotta use on of the other gears just like defiant said though. Personally I use first as I never shift into it while moving so the gear gets the least ammount of shift wear.

Of course you might have bought 2 trannies that do not have a reverse function. Therefore. you should just park on the street.

but its better on gas mileage that way :thumb: :p

seriously, i always thought you had to shift into first and then into reverse... i just dropped it into reverse the other day and i realized what i had done and it was then that i realized you dont have to put it in first and then into reverse. its kinda habit now though, i always shift into first and then into reverse even though i have no grinding issues. my friend with a gst does the same thing, but if he doesnt, he gets grinding.
