I recently have a problem with my reverse gear on my 2g eclipse gst, when selecting reverse there is a grind, and i can hear the tranny making a noise. My driver side axle was recently broken due to broken balljoint in the lateral control arm. But we put back the axle for temporary running until we can get the new axle in. I was wondering this might cause the Grind.

Fellow Dsm'ers help me out. All inputs would help :thumb:

Your axle wouldn't cause it to grind only in reverse or any gear really as far as I'm aware.

For your reverse it happends on plenty of cars becuase 1st and reverse are the most used (duh)

what you should try is pressing the clutch all the way in, move the stick to reverse and apply constant pressure with your hand and slowly pull of the clutch until the stick slides into the gear then drive.

I've done it and i know others who have.

That isn't going to fix anything it just help preventing any more grinding.

good luck! :thumb:

Thanks guys, i tried putting into 1st before going to reverse, it helped a bit.
Is there anyway to fix the problem?

yikes!

I hate to break this to you but the only way to FIX it (not just avoid it or find away to minimize it) is to....

Either,
1:Replace the trans
or
2:take trans out and rebuild it

number 2 isn't bad if you have desires to build up your trans for more power.

sorry man wish there was another way for ya.

Replacing or rebuilding the entire transmission just because reverse grinds is not a good idea.

As far as I know reverse doesn't have synchros like the forward gears and it will grind sometimes. If you put it in 1st then reverse it will not grind or not as much.

You can also try pressing the clutch pedal and waiting few seconds before you put it in reverse. That also works sometimes

Of course make sure:
1. You bleed your clutch once in while
2. Have good fluid in the transmission
3. Your shifter cables are adjusted properly

Thank you, i will start checking the cables, then see what i can do next.
