I am having some transmission problems that I have been trying to troubleshoot for a week or so. It all started after getting an oil change. Hopefully just a coincidence. It is a 1999 2.4l Eclipse Spyder. The car will not shift into reverse at all. When the car is in "L" "2" or "D" the car is in first gear and does not want to shift into 2nd. It will eventually pop into 2nd around 6000rpm and squeal the tires. It is not just a 1st to 2nd gear problem. I cant get it in 3rd or 4th either. After driving it a couple of times I was able to get it to kinda shift to 2nd and 3rd by letting my foot off the gas and and let the rpm come down to about 1500rpm and it shifted once or twice. But if i accelerate say 0 to whatever at only 1500-2000 rpms it still wont shift. I was getting DTC P1750 "manufacturer control transmission" but later is interpreted as "Solenoid Assy problem". There is a solenoid clicking when I put it in any gear expect "L". I removed the valve body and checked the solenoids and the resistance that goes with each. All are within tolerance. They checked out fine with a 12 volt source. I replaced the filter when I put everything back together. Filled it back up with SP-III [needed 5 quarts @ $5.40 each. ouch!] Still the same problem. When I shift it in reverse or any gear I here a solenoid repeatedly clicking. <--- I think that has something to do with the problem.
I pulled codes off the TCU this time and i am getting codes 52, 54, and 86. The Trouble Diagnostics Charts on alldatadiy says Replace Kickdown brake. #86 says basically "limp mode" engaged. #54 4th gear ratio incorrect and #52 says 2nd gear ratio incorrect. My concern is could it be a fluid pressure problem? What does the Kickdown brake do? Will that address the reverse and gear shifting problems? Why is my solenoid [not sure which one] continuously clicking expect when in "L"?

I am beginning to think that it is an electrical problem. I had some problem a couple of weeks ago and ended up just replacing the battery. It seemed the ground was corroded and killed the battery. What transmission electronics are involved in reverse. I have read many post about clicking solenoids but never found an answer. I wonder if I have a bad connection somewhere. Any one got any thoughts?

The TCU along with inputs from the PCM are the only eletronics involved. As for the solenoid clicking, that is what controls pressure in the valve body to apply the gears. Now if you checked the solenoids and they checked good, start going backwards. Try the TCU if that checks good try the PCM. Also make sure that all the wiring is good and dosen't anve any opens or excessive resistance. That could lead to the clicking solenoid if the power supply to it was intermittant. As for the shifting problem, the car is in limp in mode, so the trans is giving only what you need to drive it to be repaired. I am unsure of the failsafe gear in the transmission, but it sounds like you are in the failsafe gear. As for the kickdown, its a valve that as you put your foot to the floor allows line pressure to increase holding off on the upshift. But from what you described its an eletrical problem, somewhere, either in the wiring or a bad trans solenoid. Hope that helps.

Well this is my question now. Since I do not have reverse does that mean that it has to be internal and I have to rebuild?
