rev but wont go

sometimes, maybe 1/5 times i come to a stop while in drive and i try to go again i push on the gas and it revs but car won't move. i learned fast not to keep reving it or eventually i get a wicked "launch". if only i could get it to launch like that when i want it to . i put in some more tranny fluid but im not sure if the prob is even the tranny or if it's the switch in the car. at nighttime the light on the shifter won't come on until i hit it sideways.

and is it normal to be able to freely move the shifter from the low gear up to reverse without having to push down on the button? it does seem "free" while in drive, maybe it's just slipping around and isn't actually the tranny doing the slipping ? the trans was rebuilt back in december...

seems like you maybe missing a few parts out of the mechanism. When this happens try to put in in low or 3rd gear to see if it just popped out of drive. Possibly it could be doing that. If it launches that hard your torque converte should be in good shape, fluid pump in the front of the tranny may be going causing loss of pressure in the transmission? just a few ideas.

is it leaking? you said you put more tranny fluid in it.

now that you mention it, i just figured it was oil from my oil cap. i put rtv all over the inside of it but then it started leaking oil around the seal itself on the cap. im pretty sure my pcv valve's just a little clogged. but there is a few drops on my tranny every once in a while.

you put RTV around your oil cap? no wonder the PCV is clogged

nah i put it around the screw in the middle of the cap, the rubber seal is all hard though the pressure goes right by it.

could also be your rings going out for the oil from the cap.

But it is normal to go from 1st to N without pressing the button.

Have you checked your shift linkage for damage! It may not be shifting your tranny properly. If your linkage is ok you probably f*ckd your friction plates and you tranny is slipping so you need another rebuild! Check your tranny fluid for metal particles and a burnt smell. If it has metal you messed up the hard parts in the tranny if you have burnt paper like material you burned the friction plates from all that hard reving!

alright, im gonna go check on the fluid atm. but on my way home just now i was getting up to 55 mph and the tranny wouldn't shift outta 3rd gear . i was goin 50mph and it stayed at 4.5-5k rpm constantly so i let off the gas and it went down to 2k rpm but didn't go back into 2nd. i did this a few times and finally got it up to 6k rpm in 3rd but od would not come in. but at this rate it makes me wonder if my tranny has 5 gears or not. cause when im going 95mph i thought i was in 4th gear but it drops down to 3k rpm at 100mph? so is overdrive 4th gear and then the tc locking up act like a 5th gear or something?

k, the i drained a little fluid. it dark dark brown, almost blackish. doesn't smell like burnt paper but smells like ass though .
