ok I'm getting a really annoying noise coming from my transmission or it could possibly be coming from between engine and tranny.

the car has 260,000 km's on it and was sitting outside for 3 years before I bought it.

when I started it for the first time it was fine no noise but since their is an intermittent annoying squealing noise coming from the transmission... while sitting in neutral if I hit the gas I can induce the noise.

it is not constant and sounds more like 2 loose plates rattling against one another or a bearing..... their is no pattern to the noise it comes and goes, hard on the gas when the car is cold will always cause it but sometimes it'll go away after warming up but this is not always.

it is not caring of what gear the car is in, it doesn't care what speed I'm going the noise is more related to engine RPM.... it has to be something loose sitting or rattling... it sounds really bad but I've put about 200km's on it while trying different things to get rid of it.

2 mechanics and I thought it was possibly the release bearing on the clutch but after wasting $300 on a complete clutch negative the noise is still present as inconsistent as ever.

we tried tapping the starter motor while the engine was running nothing, I shook the shifter and it suddenly stopped but when it started soon after shaking the shifter didn't help.

I can feel the squealing / vibration through the shifter but nowhere else.... I just got home from driving 30 km's and it was making the noise intermittently all the way until I dropped below 20 km's an hour... but as mentioned I believe it was more to do with fluctuating rpm and shifting action combined than any 1 thing on it's own.

I hate noises like this, Hard to diagnose over the internet, Is there any possibility you could make a video of the car running so we can get a better idea? It does it in neutral right? Did you check the gear oil in the tranny and Transfer case ? Did you check to see if the starter is in tight?
I am guessing sice you and 2 tech's looked at it, That it is not a belt or the water pump, Power steering pump,A/C compressor etc... making the noise. Try to get a video. Good luck.

yeah I guess I'll have to make the video or more notably audio recording of it.

fluids have been swapped, the noise is not a belt.... it's hard to describe it's not a sqealing so much but besides that it's coming from around the transmission and the belts are on the opposite side of the engine.

I was hoping it was starter clutch rattling / scraping but we had the engine running while tapping it with a hammer and nothing didn't affect anything..... as mentioned it can lightly be felt through the shifter when it is happening.

I'll have to spend some time figuring out this whole "internet thing" and record an audio stream of it in action, will do asap.

I may go to the Mitsubishi dealer in hopes that they've heard it before on Monday.

if you have ever free spun a pully wheel on anything...... you know start spinning and it's ok but then suddenly starts to chatter spin that is the sound.

I was having a hard time nailing down a proper description of the sound but that is it and it's coming from the transmission.

ok another way to consider it is when a fan bearing goes... same thing.

anyway the noise is 100% coming from the transmission... I don't know what is still moving in the tranny when the clutch is not engaged but their can't be much..... I've found a possible transmission NV-T350 1997 Neon tranny that has a claimed 78,000 km's on it..... if anyone knows of any parts that can be pulled from the tranny without totally tearing it down that may be causing my noise problems let me know.

if I have to rebuild I'll just replace the cost is simply to high to warrant the investment.

I had a friend listen to it today and he claims if it's not the release bearing it's the "pilot bearing" apparently their are 2 bearings..... he said I just need to pull the tranny again and use a puller to get the other bearing out and replace it.

anyone know if this sounds about right and more notably are their any more bearings that could be causing this that I can change without rebuilding the transmission.

just a final update for any that find this thread later on.

we pulled the transmission again.... the problem is/was not the pilot bearing the clutch for the car is complete modular and the pilot is in it.

after pulling the transmission we started the car and could not replicate the noise so it aboslutely is in the transmission, we are now in the process of taking it apart in hopes of finding the problem bearing... the tranny shifts fine with no issues so it will not be getting a total rebuilt just replacing the bearings and then putting it back in the car.
