Resonance is killing me...

I just bought a 98 GSX with Big 16G, full 3" exhaust, no cat and what appears to be a huge generic muffler. At highway speeds the resonation is horrible. I have read about what seems like 1000 threads about exhaust on here and have decided to throw in a Thermal muffler and Cat. Has anyone done this? If so, did it make a difference or should I bite the bullet and install a cat and new cat-back system. I can get away with the muffler and an eBay cat for $200.

I am not concerned about losing a couple of hp. This is my DD, I have a rediculously loud car for the Summer time so I'm trying to get as close to stock sounding as possible without replacing the entire system.

Well, this was my issue when I was in the market for an exhaust. Ended up getting the Apex'i WS (World Sport) catback which is similar if not the same as the Rs*R. I'm very happy with it-- has 2 resonators and noise is very close to stock (a tad higher, but sounds good), plus its 3". I think I bought it for like $275 new but it was off some guy that was selling it.

I've also been told you could go to a muffler shop and have them weld in resonators to kill some of the noise. Don't know how much that would cost. That plus a good muffler should get you closer to a stock sounding exhaust.

Yep, that does help, thanks a lot. I have come across Apexi WS cat-back systems with a 60mm inlet, but not a 75mm. I'm sure I will find something on the web. Thanks again.
