I have a 99 eclipse gs with the most annoying squeal in the world. Before anyone asks both belts have been replaced several times. Even mitsubishi has properly tightened them not that that means anything. The power steering pump has been replaced. The crank pulley(harmonic balancer) has been replaced. The tensioner pulley has been replaced. It does not squeak when I turn on the A/C so please dont ask. There is zero play in my alternator pulley. Yes they are both properly tightened. The water pump is fine as well. I am all out of ideas and its the most annoying thing in the world. Any suggestions?

Wow, thats a tough one. Well, you could always try the "belt dressing" spray from an auto parts store. I mean shit, you've tried everything else, why not?

Hope you figure it out. U must get some weird looks. :D

The belt dressing only works a for soo long..I'm guessing your alternator belt need to be tightened..I had the same thing happen to me when I put in a new alternator..

Unless it's a whine, my gf's car whines a bit, but one of her belts is too tight...

LOL actually I try and drop it into neutral before I get to a light so its not as obvious its me LOL

Like I said in my first post. I've tightened the belts and have had Mitsubishi "professionally" LOL tighten the belts.

Your alternator might not be on right as in might be crooked a little bit.

How could this be? The alternator only has a pivot bolt and then a tensioner bolt and locking nut.

Well with it increasing with engine load. It is deffinatly in the belts or pulleys. What I would do is drop some belt dressing/penetrating oil/ water on each belt slowly. When noise goes away it is either that belt or that pulley. How does timing belt look? Could be a timing belt squeeling aswell. Or a idler or tensioner for the timing belt.

I have same problems with my car. I squeal even louder when its cold at start and when I accelerate. It was my alt. belts. It was too tight, even thought it was a little loose.

Every dsm out there has had a belt squeel from being too tight or too loose. Just have to find the happy spot. His best bet to pinpoint it is dripping a liquid on the belt/ pulley to find it.

Maybe your tensioner is going bad..Or the mechanics at Mits are just not great at their job....

Try that belt dressing as a last resort tho..

pull both belts and run the engine for a few moments it sounds as if you have a failing idler pulley or a failing tensioner pulley. dont run the car long as you wont be turning the waterpump and you wont be charging the system without the alternator but it will be ok to run the car for a few moments without it. long enough to either rev it or drive to the end of the driveway and back.

as the car is accelerating or cdecelerating it could e adding the extra side loads on the pulleys needed to cause the bearings on the inside of the pulleys to squeal

hey i have the same prob but i have a 1.8l and i was wondering did your car ever shut down because of the squealing i replaced my altornator and my belts and it had this low pitch squeal like a bearing was going so i ignored it and 4 hrs later the car looses power and shuts off

Sounds like you have something on one of your pulleys thats causing it to slip. One of your issues also is once a belt starts to squeal and it's gets hot it will stretch a bit causing more squeal. I would take the belts off. Take mineral spirits or something good at removing grease and clean all your pulley channels then get new belts and try again. I say new belts because my experience is once they start squealing it's not long til they are worn and weak.

The only other thing I can think of is check and make sure it's not your timing cover rubbing on them. They have a bad habit of sticking out a bit more when they start getting old..

take the belts off and spin all the pullys by hand and make sure they are not bend or loose. I would also put new belts on, once they start squealing they are starting to stretch.

Check the Harmonic Balancer(crank pulley). If the rubber is cracked or showing wear you should change it. I had this problem and changed the belts twice before I found it. Hope this helps
