First time poster here so please take it easy on me. I'm in the process of a 6 bolt swap with an engine that came with the T-belt off. I've got the cams at TDC and the crank will only go about a quarter of the way around. It does go just far enough to be only 1 tooth off of the timing mark, but I'm assuming that it should rotate freely?

So my question is: Bent valves or something wrong in the block itself? Or is there an easier solution I'm not seeing? The guy I bought it from said the head should be good.

Any help would be greatly appriciated.

Thanks, Aaron

Thanks for replying. I was trying to put a new belt on. There are no spark plugs in currently either. Every other timing mark is lined up with the crank being off one tooth and not rotating any further..

Hmm.. Well, a few things to check. Remove your valve cover ( if you havn't already) to check if all of your valvetrain is still intact. Secondly, look down the spark plug holes to make sure there isn't something in your engine. Slim chance, but I've seen it :/. Lastly, with the belt off, make sure the oil pump rotates freely.

Thanks guys, I'll try both. The cam gears do turn as well as the oil pump. I'm embarrassed to say, but I haven't looked down through the spark plug holes to check for debris. With the head off, everything does looks in order, but I am a newb after all.

Dont sweat it, It takes a while of working on these things day in day out to get the problem solving knack down :). Just to clarify really quick, is the engine in the car?

The engine is out of the car. I just went over to look at it and the spark plugs are in there after all. Could have swore they were out. Sorry for the miss information.

Probably just good compression ;) Take the plugs out, then try to turn it over. Also, are you using the 1/2" drive ratchet? Or a smaller one with an adapter?

Okay, I'll give that a try. I have been using a 1/2 ratchet but I really didn't want to bear down on it too much because of fear for the valves. It shouldn't be the cam caps since the cams rotate, right?

That did it. Thanks for the help. Didn't quite get done though since I've got a 6 bolt tensioner and a 7 bolt tensioner arm. Mabye next weekend. Thanks again!
