8 bent exhaust valves and 2 broken ones

I started tearing my motor down expecting a broken balance belt and a seized oil pump.
But the balance shafts have been eliminated, and the oil pump spins freely.
The engine spins fine but it will only turn about 90 % of the way around.
What the hell is going on?????

What I know about ( I bought the car in non-running condition)

Clutch was replaced last year
Camshafts are out of the engine
About 8 teeth are missing from the Timing belt
The Timing Belt was broken but I'm not sure if the PO broke it when he started tearing it down
There was some wear on the rod bearings

As of right now Im starting to think the engine jumped time and took out a few valves.
Help a brother out!

Did you pull the head off? It may be that you need a rebuild, so plan on that or look forward to a 6 bolt motor if you don't already have one.

Not yet.
If I need to I'll probably stick with a 7 bolt just because I won't have to change anything.

You probably broke a valve in on of the cylinders and is locking up the motor. I agree, pull the head off to see the extent of the damage on the motor.

I'm thinking the same thing, so the head will be coming off tomorrow.
Thanks for the fast replies.

Just make sure to keep that as an option. The swap isn't really all that hard to do. If you feel confident enough and can get a good block/engine, I say go for it but, it is entirely up to you. Some people say it is a must but, again it is up to you. I had my 1st engine crap out and a 6 bolt motor was the cheaper option. I got a used 1991 motor and tranny for $700.00 and put it arp head studs, t-belt kit, water and oil pump and the motor is fine.

I pulled the head today....
6 really bent exhaust valves and 2 broken exhaust valves.
I'm pretty sure the head is toast but the block is good though.

Did you check the cylinder walls for scratches or abnormal wear?
Surprisingly the cylinder walls are in good shape, the valves were just barely stuck in the piston.

Anybody got a usable head???? For a reasonable price

I had two valves break and the stems shot into my cooling passages and the combustion bowl
was rattled with piston and valve shrapnel. Also, my cylinder walls were pretty scratched up.

How did the stems end up in in the coolant passage?

How did the stems end up in in the coolant passage?

The valves hit the pistons so hard, it broke the valves in several different pieces and bounced around and punched through the exhaust passages into the cooling passages causing a severe coolant leak.

Basically, if someone builds you an engine - make sure to inspect the timing belt tensioner pulley and other timing belt parts or else, things like that happen when you go to start it up.

Thats why only I will build my future motors (if needed). I trusted too many different people and got poorly built motors.

When I find a head I'll be doing all the work.
I gotta say these engines seem really easy to work on.

Found a head just gotta get $$$$$.
If all goes well I should have it driving in about a week!!!

Where are you getting the head from? Make sure to inspect it once you get it. Make sure that the head surface is nice and flat.

I found one on here in the classifieds, but its in Mass.:(
So I can make the drive or pay shipping.
