So for a while now my car has been a little wierd at idle. It kind of idles high as it is. When ever it is idling it will seem to like sip a beat every once in a while, maybe like once every 3-5 minutes. After getting it completely hot it wil almost die after putting in the clutch and sometimes does die when you punch it a little then push in the clutch and hold it in.

It did not seem like a big problem until just now. I was going to mcdonalds and I punched it a bit here and there. And right before I pulled in my driveway I punched it and let it slow itself down by compression before I pulled in, from like 5k. I pulled in put it in neutral let it edle, seemed fine. Then the idle started acting wierd jumping up and down a little and almost dieing. Then it died. Would not start. Cranked it a couple times for like 5 seconds. Then I waited like 30 seconds it started. Then it did it's little skip the beat thing but just died. What i mean by skip the beat, is it just seems like it turs off for a half second. I started it back up and before at idle and full operating temp if I gave it gas, the rpm's would drop down to like 5-600 and correct itself. I did it this time and it just died. Then would not start again. Then I just quit with it and came here

Could this be from boost leaks/running rich? I am running rich, and my LTFT says -13. This is a rebuilt engine with 350 miles on it.

I just went out right now, started it up again, was fine for like 10 seconds. Idle jumped up like 400rpm then instantly to normal. Did that twice, and a 3rd time it just died.

Maybe because the car is running in closed loop until the engine gets to normal operating temps. After that it goes into open loop.if there is a boost leak the electronics on the car will constantly try to compensate, therefore making the car idle like crap.

alright. I will see what I can do. Im going to let it cool down, see what the idle does when cool again. Can't go out and check stuff, I dont even have a damn flashlight.

Anyone else with any thoughts?

I had very similar problems with my old prelude, it was running super rich and would drive fine for awhile, but after it sat or heated up it would turn into a piece. Apparently running that rich was altering the timing via the ecu, but i doubt thats your problem. Do you have a fuel pressure regulator to adjust? Could it have washed the rings from running too rich? First things i always do when i'm unsure of the problem is check all the fluids and for boost leaks. Have you adjusted anything lately (idle, timing, unhooked any hoses etc). First thing, do a boost leak test and then see whats up.

Okay so its just a idle issue. You know you can start it and take a can of carb cleaner and spray around the intake and throttle body and all other parts that see vac pressure. If there is a leak the carb cleaner will cause the car to idle way down or idle up. It is another easy way I have found. Boost tester does just as good though.

Fluids are fine. Nothing leaking under the car, so I guess im assuming. Ive checked them daily since the new engine and they have always been good. Im running super rich obviously. Ive had this problem since I got the car back, but it has just seemed that all of a sudden everything it was doing is worse, like dieing instead of the rpm's lowering then correcting itself.

So, the car cooled down a little bit, I tried to drive it, but when in gear and going slowly the idle just jumps all over then it dies. Im very lost.

So I went to start it this morning, now it is completely cold, and still does it. It idles fine for about 10 seconds, then the idle starts jumping around and it dies. What should I check?

As was said, Check for:

Boost leaks
Test your ISC
Test your TPS
Is your BOV Vented?
Clean your throttle body Properly

After that you should find your problem. But start with the easy things cause some of the parts like the ISC can get pricey.

I try and check those things. Im worried that I hurt something in my engine, do you thing if I did it would run fine initially then do it?

Ok, so now the car just wont start. Now im worried.

just stop trying to crank it and drive it until you can figure out and correct the problem. ive been having the idling issues for a couple weeks. the more you crank and drive the worse its gonna get. or at least mine did. i would do a boost leak check and take a spray bottle filled up with soapy water and spray on all the IC couplers and tb elbow and tb. its just like checking for a leak in a tire. if you have a leak it will immediately start bubbling up all around the leaky spot.

if you dont find any boost leaks, take an ohm meter (multimeter), and test the IAC motor. to test the IAC pull the electrical connector off the iac and put the negative lead of the ohm meter in the center pin on the top row, and the positive lead on each of the pins on either side of the center one. do one at a time and test for ohms. you will do 4 different checks. you'll get 2 readings on the top row, 2 more on the bottom. each should check out 28-33 ohms. if it reads something way out of that range, the iac is bad.

hope you get it figured out.

No, I took it to a shop hoping they will do it for free since I they just put my engine in. I will let you know though.

What I did do is look for any hoses or pipes that may have popped off and there were none. Unplugged the tps and it ran the same, unplugged the maf and ran worse, and lastly I tried resetting the ecu which did not work. Also no codes popped up on my logger. COuld this be my fiav?

Alright, so it is either the ignition module, or the crank angle sensor. How much do these cost and how hard are they to swap out?

So I know what it is now. The crank sensor was going out.

Final symptoms for future reference.

Idle would jump back and forth at idle. If you gave it gas it would rise then when you let off it would instantly die. Once it died it would not start up again right away. Got progressively worse as I tried to keep starting it.
