Mods, please move following out of sub-forum to main Newbies forum if that is the more appropriate place.

I'm looking at buying a '98 GSX and I noticed a fair amount of what appeared to be surface rust on the bottom hem flanges of both doors and also around the trunk (outside the seals on all cases).

I wouldn't have given this much notice, but I also have a '95 Miata (bought with 75k miles on the clock) which I am under and into all the time and have remarkably little to no rust in all areas (never driven in winter and rarely in rain under my watch; can't vouch for previous owners).

So I guess what I'm asking for is owners of low mileage '97-'99 DSMs driven in the midwest and northeast areas of the country (snow/rust belt) to post pics of the door and trunk flanges and their engine bays to see if what I'm seeing is normal or over-the-top.

Thanks a bunch! :)

I dont have any pics because I'm at work, but my car only has rust in 2 spots, and both are about this size, O. It all depends on the car and how much its cleaned. 96 tsi awd, 2 minor spots in the fender and hood, driven year round, washed 1-2 times/week during winter, every other day in the summer. Just take care of the car.

I have absolutly no rust on my car and im from Grand Rapids,MI

Not exactly what you are looking for but I have a '95 talon with 146,000 Northern miles on it. I have had it for two winters, don't wash it often. Rust is under the hatch on left side outside of seal and on driver shock tower (just surface). No rust at the doors that I know of. No pics as I am at work.

i have a tiny spot but the passenger front strut tower under the hood, at the bend on the bottom of each door as it starts to travel up, but my trunk is the worst ever, if i lift the hatch thing up, on the left side before it starts to go down into the tire well, i have a hole over there, and the whole bottom of my trunk is completely rusted open, i had to take the spare out of the car because im afraid the rack the spare sits on was gonna fall out of the car, its that bad, if i pushed down on that rack, if would fall to the ground :notgood: . if it wasnt already dark outside, i would take a picture

old post I know

I have the same problem with my new car which the trunk section is rusting out and the support for the spare wheel is coming loose. What have people done to fix this. I will have to cut out the complete bottem section of the spare wheel area and weld in a new peice or just whld some sheet metal i there. Has any one done this?

I have seen cases where the spare tire well was cut out and a new piece was welded to cover the opening. These were done with racing in mind, however if you have a good insurance company and trust them , you can remove the spare tire and well and just cover it with a flat piece of metal and do the proper finishing. I actually like the way it looks from behind the car, I may do it one day.
